Valerie Hunt (nee Whatmough)

I am trying to trace Valerie Hunt (nee. Whatmough) whose parents had the grocers shop on the corner of Higher Antley Street and Ormerod Street back in the 60's.

Does anyone have any photos of the area from around that time, particularly of the shops or maybe even the Police box which stood on the corner, when it was not being knocked over?

Re: Valerie Hunt (nee Whatmough)

I've never seen a photo of that police pillar (correct term) There was once in 1960 a photo taken in the snow of PCs George Thompson and Dave Ball walking from the market hall towards No 1 pillar which was on Bridge's corner. It won a competition These pillars were of cat iron and had a flap which the public could open to reveal a grille thorough which they spoke to the switchboard at the poilice station. In the other side was a locked compartment available for the policeman's use in speaking to the switchboard.

I remember that shop back in them days, they had a bit of space at the front where they had veg on dislay, but I don't recollect any blue police pillar, if they were cast iron, then what ever hit them would be badly damaged.

Re: Valerie Hunt (nee Whatmough)

I have recieved a PM with Valerie's contact details - thanks.
I know the Police Box (Pillar) was hit by vehicles, several times but I am not too clear on the details. I am hoping my Dad will know more about it - I will post more if I find out.
