Care Home Advise
A relative has asked if she can be placed into a care home.
Now The cost is £400 Per week. Who pays this? She ownes her own home but was going to give that to family to live in/ own, I hear they will ask for it to be sold to fund the cost of care? Anyone give any advise on this matter. TIA |
Re: Care Home Advise
Hi
I'm currently in the same situation with my Mum. Only difference is that we have been told by the NHS that Mum HAS to be in a nursing home full stop. They will fund the nursing element of the care .........currently at £101 per week, the rest we have to make up ourselves. The full cost is £545 per week. Mum will still get her pension and her attendance allowance that she got before, as she is self funding. In answer to your question Mr D..............yes your relative wil be asked to sell their home if they can't make up the cost of paying the fees from savings. The value of their home will be classed as "savings" whether it is sold or not. You cannot at this stage sign the home over to somebody else, or let somebody else live in it if they are not there already. That is actually classed as fraud. Don't mean that to be a dig at you personally, it's what I have been told myself. I had a big argument at the meeting about my Mum yesterday. I was told that Mum HAS to be in a nursing home, but that we will only get £101 per week for the nursing care towards it. So my reply was, well, if your not funding it, and your saying that Mum is not poorly enough to warrant continueing care then I'm taking her home. I was told point blank that I couldn't. So, because my Mum has worked all her life, and owns her own house we now have to sell it to pay for Mums care. If Mum had not worked all her life, claimed the dole and lived in a council house the care would be paid for by the Social Services. Call this fair!! I don't think so. Sorry, I'm going off on one here. Mr D..................try ringing the local Age Concern office and ask them for advice. They are well up on these kind of things and will offer you heaps of advice. |

Re: Care Home Advise
I can't really offer any advice, just sympathy.
If someone's home has to be sold to pay for residential care, they do let you keep £22,250. (That's the most up to date figure I can find, until recently it was only £16,000 worth of equity/savings you could keep.) What makes it even more unfair is that British citizens who live north of Hadrian's Wall, get free care, and aren't forced to sell their homes to fund it.:( |
Re: Care Home Advise
Pity you don't live in bonny Scotland as the care would be free up there:(

That's what I meant when I mentioned those who live north of Hadrian's Wall.:D |
Re: Care Home Advise
It's ludicrous that Scotland can do this and England can't. People here who have been careful and saved seem to always end up being penalised. People who have frittered everything away just get more handed to them on a plate. It does seem grossly unfair.

Especially to a generation who worked hard and paid taxes all their lives, and were told that they'd be well cared for in their old age. It's even more galling that the situation differs throughout the various countries that make up the supposedly United Kingdom. |

Re: Care Home Advise
Thanks for the info.
Another case of stitch up, as said, someone who has worked all there life, has to pay for care fair enough if it wasnt such a high cost. I will advise her to sell the property and blow it all in las vegas, come back and demand care/assistance (If only).:D I will pop in to Age Concern, see what they have to say. |

Re: Care Home Advise
forceten is right, my mum worked for a "retirement home" for about 10 years and she found out that if residents have property then it has to be sold to fund their "Keep" at the home, then when all the money is gone, then the government will pay for them. nomatter what is written in a will as to who is to inherit the house, it still has to be sold

Re: Care Home Advise
well theres a simple soolution to that isnt there.....sell the house before she goes into a home then give the money to someone else :D

that was the rule the SS applied - probably applied by council too Best spend it on a world cruise, first class mode, where excellent medical facilities are provided. At least that way you will have some nice memories as you sit amongst the demented geriatrics for the rest of your life |
