Snow Chains on Tires

I'm right in thinking there illegal here? Why are they illegal though?

Was just having a conversation how Britain comes to a near stand still when there's a few inch of snow ... in other parts of Europe they use them why don't we? :)

Because in europe theyre better prepared for it.

Snow chains when i worked for the bus company and coaches were going to europe they had to have a set of chains in the coach and the driver also had to know how to put them on.

You're wrong. They are legal in England, as KSH says it's just that they aren't compulsory. In some European countries it's illegal not to carry them in adverse weather conditions. More here : Compulsory equipment : snow chains and winter tyre requirements for ski resorts - The AA

also judging by the inability of people to turn of fog lights when its not foggy I can see people driving round in the middle of summer on them ruining further our already crappy roads :D

Snow chains! For the amount of snow you guys get? Are you serious? The only vehicles I see with snow chains are the large transport trucks, and I don't think they use those unless they are hauling thru the Rockies. Last winter, I got thru with all season radials ... no problem. If you are used to driving in snow and ice you don't need the expensive tires that the garage tries to sell you ... best thing to do if it snows heavily, or if there is freezing rain, is to wait until the plows and the sanders have been out. Even after a major snowfall, the city plows can get the main drags plowed out in a matter of hours ... and within a day, or maybe two, the city is back to normal.:alright:
