I don't think there is much scrap value in them though. Mostly made of cardboard from what I've seen. There is one in the War Museum at Salford Quays.

You're quite right about the scrap value, but not quite about the cardboard Russel.

And there's a grain of truth to every joke: The car, which was produced in Zwickau, Saxony, was made of a hard plastic known as Duroplast, made from recycled materials including pressed cotton fibers, synthetic resins and rags from the Soviet Union.

Saw quite a few on my trips to Berlin in late '70s. Bit dated design wise but looked OK for a runabout - until you saw or heard one with the engine running.

there are still a few to be seen in this country and one local to me. a car that has been seen more of a joke in the west but you have more chance of seeing one on western roads than say a vauxhall/opel senetor.
