Lenient sentences

The driver who killed a 4year old girl driving at 80mph in a 30mph limit has been jailed for 9yr 4 months. His passenger has been jailed for 6yrs 8months so that equates to 2yr 8months for the killing. The grandmother may never walk again. I think it is time the law is changed and anyone committing this sort of crime should be charged with manslaughter and the heavier penalties applied.

Re: Lenient sentences

Totally agree, sentences to me should be a strong deterrent and have become far too Lenient, thanks i reckon to the army of do-gooders society has groomed.

Re: Lenient sentences

I agree Cashman. The do gooders have a lot to answer for. If a 4yr olds life is only worth 2yr 8 months there is something sadly wrong.

Re: Lenient sentences

If, as we're sometimes told, that most serious crimes are repeatedly committed by a very small % of the population, you'd think it would be relatively easy to identify, prosecute, and incarcerate them for long enough to remove their ability to commit whatever crime that is their speciality.
But, just think of the thousands of employed people that are dependent on criminals.
Why would a judge bang-up criminals for longer if it was likely to reduce his or her future workload?

Re: Lenient sentences

was the car stolen ?

just puzzled as to why the passenger has gone to prison as well

drivers who kill doing ridiculous speeds and dangerous driving should be treated as manslaughter not reckless driving

Re: Lenient sentences

What exactly is a lenient sentence?

Many of us make irreversible mistakes, it can be forgiven even if causing death of another person, IF this sort of accident happens when someone legally fit to drive with all the certificates etc to allow them to be on the road.

However, a banned or drunken driver should be given no excuse, they have deliberately broken the law and should feel the full force of legal retribution, similarly someone found driving without insurance should be prosecuted to an extent that exceeds the cost of the insurance to a degree that prevents them from re-committing such an offence and sets them up as an example to others that may be tempted to do similar.
If the law doesn't make them suffer more than the crime is worth why do we have law?

Re: Lenient sentences

Yes the car was stolen so the passenger would be charged with that offence and assisting the driver. He should be prosecuted but the driver getting only 2yrs 8 months more than him is not right at all when he has killed someone and injured another person who is still in hospital months afterwards and is not expected to walk again.

Thing is hes only likely to serve 50% of that "2Yrs8 months these days, so its sod all of a sentence.

Re: Lenient sentences

Isn't the question of lenient sentences completely out of touch with the wishes of the general public. If they break the law they should be incarcerated for the total sentence, sentences to be increased if the have any previous offences - not necessarily for the same offence, and this dream of rehabilitation is a crock of >>>>. Take them off the streets if they break the law.

Re: Lenient sentences

I really do not understand why only half of a given sentence is served. What in heavens name is the point in giving one figure and meaning another. The do gooders and this Human Rights thing need to be done away with. what about the human rights of the victims? If someone kills or maims they have forfeited their own human rights in committing such an act.

people are let our of prison early because releasing criminals is cheaper than building new prisons to keep up with demand

in the past judges have been advised not to give custodial sentences because theres no room at the inn

The population has increased by oer 10 MILLION since i was a lad, its not rocket science to say there will obviously be more criminals? but all government has done is CLOSE many approved schools, detention centres,Borstals, etc thats really good government and looking after the public.

We have also imported a lot of criminals too...again, this was a government sanctioned move. Tony Blair and his unfettered immigration.

Re: Lenient sentences

It should begin in schools with children learning discipline and maybe then parents of the future would discipline their children better than most do now. There is too much of letting children have their own way and parents not being held responsible for their childrens actions. If a child 16yrs or under is out late at night causing trouble the parents should be brought to task.It their responsibility to know where they are and what they are up to.As someone said in an earlier post years ago the police would clip lads round the ear and it would be no good them going home and complaining cause they would have got another. That would not happen now mores the pity.
