News of the World Mobile Phone Hacking

Most people will already have seen this news (but no surprise it's only the 3rd item on SKY).. the hacking of phones scandal has been mostly about celebs and pretty trivial stuff, but this is a disgrace.. reports are that News of the World "investigaters" actually deleted some of the messages on the then missing girls phone which lead her parents to believe she may still have been alive..lets have no messing about here, this newspaper paid someone to gather information by any means on this case and they should be charged with perverting the course of justice!

link from the Guardian seeing as they reported this http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/ju...-news-of-world

As well as being a disgusting invasion of privacy, if as reported, this girl's messages were deleted, in order that space would be made available, so more new messages could be listened to, it could very well have interfered with the police investigation. Leading them to believe that the poor girl was still alive, and accessing her mobile, when in fact she'd already been killed.

Heads should roll...into prison.

Though it's doubtful if any editors, or Murdoch himself, will receive even a slap on the wrist.

Apparently even if there are prosecutions, this case can't be used as evidence as to why any planned take over bids can't go ahead.

This poor girl's family must feel as if their hurt is never going to end.

Seems the police have had this on file for at least five years ..that is after the Met publicly stated that all investigations into hacking had been completed and no further action needed to be taken

going fom past reports on the "phone hacking" seems Murdoch has many high placed friends of all political colours protecting his interests , the whole thing stinks to high heaven , hopefully there are enough open and honest MPs around (a coalition of the honest) to demand a complete review of whats going on and request a review of foriegn ownership of the UK media , with no excuses about how their hands are tied because of EU or Free Trade rules/laws

There have been mutterings along the lines that MP's should steer clear of taking on the media because of threatened "repercussions" from certian newspaper owners... meaning if you investigate us we will pull something out of the hat as regards your private life.. It all seems a bit to much of a coincidence when some MP stands alone.. then all of a sudden he/she is in the papers with some new scandal regarding thier private life

This whole incident is very wrong. It was the newspaper group that asked the police to re investigate from what I read

You cant arrest anyone until you know who did it. Lets hope they are dealt with to the full extent of the law. It will be some reporter or investigator that will be accused.

Anyone know what law will have been broken and what the punishment will be?

Probably some hack will be the sacrificial lamb and the rest of 'em will carry on regardless.

The British public, however, could exact its own form of punishment by boycotting News International's newspapers. Sadly, people will splutter with indignation...then nip down the newsagents to buy their NoW, Times, Sun etc.

Yeah.. I'm not sure you read the whole lot Neil..
two ex-directory numbers, however, were "blagged" illegally from British Telecom's confidential records by one of Whittamore's associates, John Gunning, who works from a base in Wiltshire. One of the ex-directory numbers was attributed by Whittamore to Milly's family home.
Then, with the help of its own full-time private investigator, Glenn Mulcaire, the News of the World started illegally intercepting mobile phone messages from Milly Dowler's phone.
To be honest I don't know if any law was broken.. but at the very least there has to be a law on hacking and intercepting then deleting messages on the phone of a 13yr old ..if not then something is very wrong.
