Oh doesn't your heart just bleed for them

Pet hates come in all shapes and sizes, at the top of my list are Doctors, and Lawyers.

I had to smile in wry amusement when I came across this in the Grauniad this morning...

Re: Oh doesn't your heart just bleed for them

Having read the full article I feel the Juniors have a point, particularly with graduates these days having the mill stone of student loans round their necks.

However, the bit which struck me more than the main point of the article was this paragraph:

"Of more than 1,000 respondents to a survey by the Criminal Bar Association - nearly half the membership - 97% want the association to explore the possibility of direct action, and four in five say they would be prepared to take action themselves. "

How long has 97% been "nearly half"? (Yes, I know that wasn't what they meant but on first reading that is how it comes across)

All that I can say is that these poor souls take home more money than I do after 18 years in a profession. Maybe they should be re-assessing what they're spending it on...

Bear in mind that most barristers live/work around London and other major cities where living is much more expensive. Also, they are self-employed - which means no work, no pay. At least if you are employed, you know what's coming in every month - I do know of one criminal barrister with a family who earned £14,000 gross last year after chambers expenses. This after spending three years doing a degree, then the Bar exams, then pupillage. There's also the fact that too many people are chasing too little work, and legal aid rates are very poor.

Yes, I admit my other half is a barrister - but I'm glad he doesn't do criminal work!
