Re: Poppy Ban

Premiership clubs have had embroidered badges on the front of their kits - no health and safety worries there. The England team should call their bluff and turn up with Poppy emblems anyway. What would happen? Would love to see them trying to defend a decision to stop the match on that basis.

Blatter is Swiss anyway, didn't they run and hide during the war ?

Re: Poppy Ban

Think the England players should respond to this stupidity, by having "Removable Tattoos" -Poppys on there foreheads, imagine the media fuss if they did, would make Blatter really look the clown he is.

Not sure about those "blinged up" ones I'm seeing on X Factor or what the celebs seem to have. Having said that, if they cost more and all the proceeds go to into the same cause it has to be all good.
Last year when talking to the poppy seller, he mentioned these blingy poppies & said they receive very little in monetary donations from the sale of these. They are on the British Legions website this year & costs range from £15 & £50, if they got every penny for every sale fair enough, but i'll stick to the 'normal' type.

Re: Poppy Ban

this was posted by one of our members on facebook ...

PLEASE WEAR A POPPY.

"Please wear a poppy," the lady said
And held one forth, but I shook my head.
Then I stopped and watched as she offered them there,
... And her face was old and lined with care;
But beneath the scars the years had made
There remained a smile that refused to fade.

A boy came whistling down the street,
Bouncing along on care-free feet.
His smile was full of joy and fun,
"Lady," said he, "may I have one?"
When she's pinned in on he turned to say,
"Why do we wear a poppy today?"

The lady smiled in her wistful way
And answered, "This is Remembrance Day,
And the poppy there is the symbol for
The gallant men who died in war.
And because they did, you and I are free -
That's why we wear a poppy, you see.

"I had a boy about your size,
With golden hair and big blue eyes.
He loved to play and jump and shout,
Free as a bird he would race about.
As the years went by he learned and grew
and became a man - as you will, too.

"He was fine and strong, with a boyish smile,
But he'd seemed with us such a little while
When war broke out and he went away.
I still remember his face that day
When he smiled at me and said, Goodbye,
I'll be back soon, Mom, so please don't cry.

"But the war went on and he had to stay,
And all I could do was wait and pray.
His letters told of the awful fight,
(I can see it still in my dreams at night),
With the tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire,
And the mines and bullets, the bombs and fire.

"Till at last, at last, the war was won -
And that's why we wear a poppy son."
The small boy turned as if to go,
Then said, "Thanks, lady, I'm glad to know.
That sure did sound like an awful fight,
But your son - did he come back all right?"

A tear rolled down each faded check;
She shook her head, but didn't speak.
I slunk away in a sort of shame,
And if you were me you'd have done the same;
For our thanks, in giving, if oft delayed,
Thought our freedom was bought - and thousands paid!

And so when we see a poppy worn,
Let us reflect on the burden borne,
By those who gave their very all
When asked to answer their country's call
That we at home in peace might live.
Then wear a poppy! Remember - and give!

As far as im concerned FIFA can go and take a running jump .... a poppy is not a commercial, political or religous symbol ... and if they cant see that .. well they aint worth dealing with ...

Re: Poppy Ban

This is an email I received this morning:

In May 2010 Tohseef Shah spray painted a British War Memorial with "Islam will dominate Osama is coming" he was fined £50 & walked free from court.

In November 2010, Emdadur Choudhury burned a Poppy during the 2mins silence. He too was given a fine, £50 and walked free from court.

Today, 2 men have been sentenced to 12 months in prison for spray painting a Poppy on a mosque. Pass this on if you think it’s a disgrace

Ex EDL members targeted Hartlepool mosque and Shotton Colliery store (From Durham Times)

I should add that the title of the email was 'Equality before the Law' and the content that people should receive a similar punishment for a similar offence.

Seems about par for the course T the police and courts are scared to death of offending our overseas friends

Groove is wondering why such a big thing has been made about the England team being unable to wear poppys in todays game. Groove is bemused such an occasion as never arose before when England have played on or around this date-12/11.05 v Argentina being one off the top of gooves head. Groove thinks this is a cynical attempt by the FA to deflect attention from the John Terry racist controversy. Groove welcomes any other suggestions as to why this is a major issue as opposed to previous years.
