Re: RIP Ron Hill

Are we talking the Ron Hill, sportsman/runner who had a range of running clothing mainly shorts & clingy legging, very big in the 80's named after him?

Re: RIP Ron Hill

About 25 years ago I ran in the Pinhaw Moor Fell Race and Ron Hill was a 'celebrity' competitor. My claim to fame was that I finished in front of Ron Hill, but I always omit the part where Ron Hill was obviously injured and approximately 30 years my senior.

RIP Ron Hill. A real success story from Accrington.

Re: RIP Ron Hill

Ron attended Spring Hill School from his family home in Dale St before starting at the Grammar School in 1950. He was already a distance runner and soon was in the cross-country team and a member of Clayton Harriers . He left in 1957 to go to Manchester University, gaining a doctorate in chemical engineering which got him a job with Courtaulds. Not long after, he started his own company in designing and making sports clothing, all alongside his sporting activities in 100 countries. His sporting achievements place him in the upper echelon of British athletes.
Ron took great pleasure in being made a freeman of his native town and in having a street in it named after him.

Re: RIP Ron Hill

Not wishing to be irreverant, but the"Ron Hill" range of clothing pretty much coloured my life as young soldier in the early 80s. Lots of the lads wore his kit for our twice daiy sport sessions, (running, followed by even more running) that was bad enough having to see meat & two veg jouncing & jiggling to the constraint of tight nylon pants.

However, what was worse than this visual scarring from fellow troops was that of certain "Pads" wives, who would proceed to squeeze their curvatures & surplus flesh into such garments then accessorize with white high heels & skimpy tops!

Some of these ladies carried it off well (extremely cold showers required for a lengthy period), but the majority .... ever squeezed a "leberwurst" spread sossy? The resulting mess & deformity kinda sums it up!

Re: RIP Ron Hill

Just read that the great Accrington Athlete Ron Hill has passed away. Sad loss to Accrington and the athletic world.

R.I.P. Ron
P.S. This is a copy from my thread in "Hall of Fame". Sorry if any confusion has been caused.

Re: RIP Ron Hill

Back in the early 1950's I was a member of the Technical School Cross Country Team, every year there was an inter school meeting, the only time we stood a chance of winning was the year that Ron wasn't there. All other years you saw the back of his head for a few hundred yards and the next time you saw him was at the finish. It was no shame being beaten by him. R.I.P.
