Re: Whalley Rd Chippy

I would just like to update this thread.
I was the proprietor of Whalley Road Chippy from 2002 - 2009.
Then it was called Oaklea Chippy.
I had the Fish Fryers Quality award and a 5 star rating from the council.
I moved from Accrington in 2009 and been back there a few times since and obviously called in there when I was about.
I was recently back and called in to see who the new proprietors were as its changed hands so many times since.
On my previous visits, disappointed was an understatement, but this time i was astounded by the cleanliness and attention to detail that was in force by the 2 ladies that where running it. I spent an hour talking and comparing notes even down to what they use in their batter mix. That is a secret but believe it or not it was what I used.
They have a methodical cleaning process very similar to my own and source the best quality ingredients available.
Unfortunately they are tarred with the previous owners reputation, but in saying that so was I when I initially took over York Street chippy in 2000 and turned that round to the best chippy in Accy.
All I can say is I would highly recommend this chippy and would urge you to give them a try as I can assure you, these people are doing everything right and I will be patronising them on my next visit,

It is always good to know if a chippy is up to scratch.
Thank you Trev for that welcome information.

Sorry to put a damper on your chippy news Margaret, but, I used the chippy when the previous owner had it, no complaints fish n chips good with large portions. I have used it since the new people took over, ok at first but on the day I decided to take the Misses a fish back guess what, the Fish was dry and tasteless like it had been warmed up. Went back after about 3 weeks and ordered my usual fish&chips and told them of my previous purchase, reply was hope you enjoy these, I didn't, chips under cooked and greasy, or oily which ever you wish to call it. Ain't been back since and wont till the sign goes up under new management.

That is sad. What a disappointment.
I don't have a chippy tea very often so it would really put me off to have such high hopes and have them dashed.

Re: Whalley Rd Chippy

Best one I think is Burnley Road, he asks if you want fish on entering, & cooks to order, has such a good turnover that chips are always fresh, been going now for years, & we, daughter, son in law & 2 g'kids regularly have 'chippy tea every Friday',,,,,, it's now a family tradition, just like Sunday tea used to be!!

For me the best is on Union Rd Ossy, just before Civic Hall on opposite side, we used it at tea time and have around once a week for last 3 years, in fact a guy that used to come on accyweb, comes regular from Huncoat and swears by the fish, we agree with that sentiment.

The Woodnook Fish bar has recently(in the last 12months) been taken over by two guys. They also cook your fish to order. I sometimes go there for Ma. He will cut the fish in two for me and batter the bits separately. This means that Ma can put one in her freezer and have it for her tea on another day.
They also do plate size cheese and onion pies....home made on the premises, you can have a slice of that with your chips. They do home made Dabs as well...you can tell they are home made as they are all different shapes and sizes.
So far it has been(according to Ma) very good.
