Re: Part time/Casual/After School Jobs

I didn't find Blazey's question 'obnoxious' at all ... was about to ask Rebekah the same question, but was pipped at the post so to speak.

Rebekah had been on here asking about jobs, and we are always curious to know how things turn out, aren't we ... which she did come back to say had obtained three jobs. I was hungry for more as wanted to know what type, and would have encouraged others (which is what she was attempting to do).

Anyway, she only stated had 'got' three jobs, we don't actually know if she took all of them up.

Blazey I'm not entirely sure there is something to praise in having three jobs. It could potentially be stupid if you are studying at the same time, as the recommended hours of work for a student is no more than 16 hours. As MY job is to discourage things like excessive work alongside studies, I don't think I should just throw out praise without knowing the full facts.
What gives you the right to say people are being "potentially stupid" if they have three jobs? Surely the best people to comment on whether this work is impacting on course work are people directly involved ie Tutors who are qualified to do so. And since when did it become YOUR job to discourage excessive work alongside studies? You are so full of your own self importance it is not true.
Well done Rebekah and good luck with your studies

Re: Part time/Casual/After School Jobs

When I was growing up, my mother had three jobs.......she cleaned the Drawing offices at Howard nand Bulloughs(morning and evening) she cleaned at the Elite Snooker clubon Saturday and Sunday mornings....and she worked at Catlows Fruit Market on Broadway every Tuesday and Friday.......OK, so I know she wasn't in education at the time, but she had four of us to bring up, so it was need that made her do these menial jobs.
If she hadn't done these jobs we would not have eaten.

And do you actually know the meaning of the word obnoxious? I don't think I said anything that was worthy of being considered obnoxious there.

Yes I do know the meaning of obnoxious but I am not going to humour you with the definition as you obviously already know.......

You are obnoxious not the question, with the way that you worded your post you were implying whether she was telling the truth...... It could have been asked in a far more softer tone by congratulating her on her efforts first and then asking what you wnated to know!.... can you not see how it could have been misunderstood? Or is that the potential law graduate in you coming through?

Also what you consider good pay may not be the same as Rebekah...... money seems to be a huge motivator to you.... She may only be earning a small sum by some standards..... but at 16 it is probably substantial to her and enables her to do what she pleases........

I do not want to cause arguments as you said in a further post.... after all I am not the one who has been described as a troll but when I see something that I don't agree with I will post my opinion whether it is liked or not..... just as you do

Rearding fitting in 3 jobs.....I have friendsat university who do indeed have 3 jobs over 3 days (not exceeding 14hrs of course), one in particular is a full time student, an OU lecturer, works in admin at the uni Library and has her full quota of clinical patients all to pay for her tuition fees, she has excellent time management and has got an average of over 85% for her 2nd year so in well on her way to her 1st class honours degree..... I think that having and holding down 3 jobs demonstrates that you can effectively manage your time. It is at the persons descretion as to having "fun" time and it depends on how they get their fun

I can only applaud the girl for her perseverance in getting the jobs it is great to see, I can only hope that my daughter has the tenacity to do the samewhen she reaches 16.... also to thank Rebekah for having the time to let everyone know the outcome of her search for employment..

Re: Part time/Casual/After School Jobs

On this occasion I'm on Blazey's side. I didn't read her question as being obnoxious. There was no implication that Rebekah couldn't, shouldn't or wouldn't be able to do 3 jobs, she simply asked "How?". Maybe she didn't "soften" the question or add emoticons but that's not Blazey's style. The question, in essence, was perfectly innocent and, I would venture, if anyone else had asked it, it would have drawn no criticism.

Blazey knows I will give her "what for" if she deserves it but I won't stand by and see her, or anyone else, unfairly damned for no other reason than her reputation. Bear in mind the old saying, "Give a dog a bad name and hang him".

Re: Part time/Casual/After School Jobs

I work with students aged 10-18yrs old most days of the week. Anything that would unwisely impact on studies is discouraged or worked around.

I'm not going to praise anything that I don't know the full details of. I work two jobs myself and I know how much impact it can have, but I still don't spend every single day of my week either studying or working, hence why I was curious what sort of a life someone could lead if they are straddling three jobs over three days, and those three days being the only three days they potentially have to themselves in the week.

Yes there ARE many ways it can be done, and in many situations it is NECESSARY for people to work such hours. I have a friend who is now a successful barrister after obtaining a first class degree, regardless of the fact that he also worked 40 hours a week in Little Chef. He wouldn't lie and say he had no social life through university as a result of that though, and he regrets that very much now.

To be honest, if it had been me who had posted that I had three jobs on this thread, or even the two that I did have, you'd have called me obnoxious then as well. It isn't just me that knows this, lots of people know it. Thankfully, I don't work for the money, I work because I love what I do and I'm fortunate enough to be able to do those jobs. Not everyone loves their work though, and the fact that someone fills their life with 1, 2 or even 3 jobs that they COULD get no enjoyment out of just because they want the money or the praise for having them just makes me feel sad. If that is what people want to work for, then fair play to them, but the only form of respect I can get is laced with sympathy that they can't just have one fulfilling job that makes them satisfied.

Re: Part time/Casual/After School Jobs

It is a fact of life that if we want to pay our way we have to work.......work is a necessity.....it is good if you can get a job that you like.....but it isn't essential to like what you are doing.
I feel very sure that, although there are some people on here who admit to loving their work, if you removed the paypacket, then they wouldn't go just for the love of it.

Re: Part time/Casual/After School Jobs

There was a job being advertised on one of the open market stalls this morning, don't know if she has got someone yet. Three days a week early morning and evening to help set up and pack up. It's the shoe stall across from Wilkinsons.

Paper round in the morning
Shop assistant during the day
Glass collector in the evening

I never had a paper round but did the other two

I once did the most ridiculous paper round for just £1 a day. I must have been 10 or 11 at the time I think? What a stupid job that was.

Can't say I've ever been a glass collector. Not done any bar work whatsoever.

Jobs are hard work to get. I found temp agencies are the way forward if you're trying to find jobs to go along with education. I've had a wide range of jobs that have given me a great amount of experience. It helps to have dipped your toe in a lot of ponds when it comes to jobs, because it's so difficult to decide what career to commit to so having a go at a lot of different types of role really helps define for you what you definitely do and don't want to go into.

I wouldn't go into anything food related again... and I think bar work would tie into that. Anything that involves me carrying plates and glasses is a no no

The biggest issue with employing people under 16, and sometimes under 18s, is insurance.

Everyone lives in fear of being sued these days
