I am currently undergoing a complete electrical rewire of a 2 bedroomed terraced house and will need it all tested and certified to satisfy local building control.

I will be surprised if you will find anyone to certify work they have not done. You are no longer permitted to re-wire your own house unless you are a competent person under the part 'P' regulations. If you are competent you would be able to test and certify it yourself.

i have rewired houses in the very recent past and had them tested and certified but the guys on holiday for 2 weeks and i need it done asap.i am very neat experienced at electrical wiring.

I am sure it is against building regs for you to do it though.

The daft thing now is that experience counts for nothing. It annoys the hell out of me that experienced people like you can not do it any more but a kitchen fitter can take a course and be certified.

IMHO part 'P' is a money making scam for contractors to charge more money in a similar way to CORGI

Not quite right there Neil.

You can rewire your own house and then get a PIR check done afterwards, you have to inform the LABC though - for a rewire it costs about £130+ ISTR.

There are certain areas that your not supposed to touch but if its all done according to BS7671 and you present a PIR then the LABC are going to pass it.

But yes, your right - it is a big scam for the LABC etc to make money.

I'm slowly rewiring my house and I'll be damned if I'm going to let some paper shuffler at the LABC
charge me just so they can store some paperwork.

BTW, to do a PIR (periodic Inspection Check) should ISTR cost about £90.

the reason for asking is I know a NICEIC reg. spark, but some are a bit funny about testing someone else's work, depends on circs as said b4 is it your own home or work for a customer, might be an idea to go onto NICEIC website and search for sparks in area, and ring round a few.

And yes I have been wiring my own home.
I'm not a qualified electrician, but I do know how to.
Your supposed to inform LABC if you replace a ring yourself, but you dont have to if your replacing a damaged bit of cable. you can damage all the bits of cable on the ring & replace them without notifying.
You can replace sockets yourself anyway.

Part P is a farce & can easily be got around for most of it, the rest most people are ignoring as there have not been any prosecutions of a DIYr ignoring it yet.

BUT... dont take what I am saying as carte blanch for anyone to mess with your electrics, its dangerous stuff & if you dont do it right you can cause some serious problems.

Thats not what I have been told by someone that knows the rules inside out.

As for part P - it is not a legal requirement, part P is only an approved document.
