Iwould agree that on the whole it s often cheaper to replace than repair. If you want someone qualified you should be looking to pay ~£15/hour. To diagnose and repair could easily take more than 3 hours in which case buy a new one with guarantee.

Its a bit sad but we often throw away perfectly good stuff becasue a small part is broken. I had a problem with an oven whose thermostat had gone do lally. It was just a set of points, probably 20p's worth. IT cost over £30 for the whole element etc becasue they didn't sell that bit on its own.
