Giro Day at any of the pubs on the Barbary Coast (County, Legs of Man, Merchants, Wheatsheaf, Dun Horse, Old Bank, Sun, Swan, Lower Sun) were always busy in the late 70's

Remember going in the Sun in late 60s with a couple of mates, we got talking to an elderly gent he past his baccy tin over asking if anyone wanted rollup one of the lads said yes and took the tin, on the lid was a hammered out Indians head with a full head dress it must have taken quite a while and plenty of patience to do this, when he opened it and took out the papers across the packet were the words H.M.Prisons. The guy was quite a character he had nowt but was willing to share what little he did have.

The Black Abby was my pub. In 1965 I had my 21st there and it was also the meeting place for the Accrington Caving Club, later to become the Northern Exploration Group. The Accy lads joined with a breakaway group of cavers from the Burnley Caving Club and some from the Northern Speleological Group, based around Blackburn. We move our meeting place/pubs several times to Padiham and Burnley before getting a Caving Hostel in Ingleton around 1965. I moved up to Ingleton in the Dales just after I got married around 1974/75 and still live there.

Three mates of mine, two sadly now departed used to frequent the Abbey during the 60s and 70s, Alan Crawshaw, Fred Firth and Kees Fillipinni, maybe you knew them.
