Looking for a Desktop and Laptop £500-£600 each

Both me and my girlfriend are going to university and are getting computers to go with - she is certain of getting a desktop - she isn't really into to computers so has left me in charge of picking her a good one haha. The possibility of building her a desktop is out of the question - it is her parent's money and if something goes wrong I don't want that over my head haha so with her it's a definite pre-build. The one I was thinking for her was this:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu ... =FS-072-OK @ £566 with 4GB of RAM

It should do her well for years as she isn't a heavy user - she'll be ecstatic that it will run Sims haha. The pre-overclocking is also a bonus as it comes with a 1 year warranty so you get the extra performance without the risk and also it is done by professionals.

Now to me I am not sure of whether or not to get a laptop or a desktop. I am going to be studying Computing for my degree so I can see an advantage in being able to take my laptop and use that during labs. Also it would mean I would be able to work whilst at my girlfriends room and when back home (only 30 minutes away and I should be home most weekends). The laptop I am looking at is this one:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu ... =LT-005-OK @ £567

With the upgraded CPU to the Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 2.1Ghz and RAM to 4GB

The other option for me would be to build my own desktop to really get the best spec possible for my money. It would probably be a similar spec to the above desktop but go for a high duo processor rather than a quad and a better graphics card - should also be able to get in a bluray reader for a similar price as well.

Any hints tips or advice ? Especially from those those who are clued up on current prices
