Can you not right click and select run as administrator? Have you got a XP Home cd or is it Windows XP Pro?

Re: please recommend...

If you boot the XP Home disk you should get an option in advanced mode to repartition the drive, just delete all existing partitions ( ALL DATA WILL BE LOST!!!!) and then let it create new ones

Re: please recommend...

Its XP pro which I believe ( I know) has an facility for only allowing administrators to make changes...which for some reason it is not letting me do anything \i tried to reinstall from safe mode and still.....

dont really feel confident enough to try to many options but having made enquiries theres a place in Rishton will do the job for £40 (if I have programme reg no and drive discs for motherboard) which seems fair enough

but thanks for your comments and help

Re: please recommend...

You dont install from safe mode, you have to boot the PC from the install CD.
