security problems

Can anybody help with this problem? I run Vista home on my Laptop, with Mcafee security centre, never had any trouble with it, well very little that is. This morning logged on to accy web and noticed it installing security icon twirling on my toolbar, carried on and when it finished a sign came up "you must restart your computer to finish installation, so while I was having breakfast I did, that's when the problem started. on rebooting it wouldn't go past the welcome screen with the small whirling icon in the centre. I waited for ten minutes (as you do) then lost my rag call the machine all the names under the son, then decided to think about it. I decided to turn back my settings to yesterday, which I did, problem solved eventually after messing about with my router too. The only thing is that its done the same again and reinstalled it, but this time I haven't rebooted my laptop. looked at my settings says firewalls and other things are okay but has questions on others which haven't seen before. on my toolbar there is a red shield Icon with a white cross in it, never seen this before, when I hold my mouse over it it says windows security alerts, I have turned off automatic updates ages ago as they were causing me problems every day, disabling toolbars etc. You have to remember I am to computer knowledge as Bernard Manning was to hang gliding, in other words I know where the on button is. Can somebody please help before the men in white coats arrive to take me away, thank you

Re: security problems

I just googled 'McAfee problems' and got over 8 million results
McAfee problems - Google Search

That seems a good reason to find some other form of security software

Re: security problems

Antivirus Internet Security Software from BullGuard.com

You can get a 60 day free trial from their site.
it isn't the cheapest around but I have found it to be the best.
I reckon that I would rather pay not to have viruses on my machine than to have the hassle and have to pay someone to fix my computer.

Re: security problems

Jay, much like you, even though my first computer course was in '67 - I hate them. What i have found is that with Norton and Mcafee I always experienced problems.
Advised to run AVG, Spybot and Advanced System Care. Haven't had problems for years, so I guess it works OK. Possibly one of the techies can give you better advice, but that works for me.

Re: security problems

I wouldn't touch Norton or Mc Afee......Norton made my computer run really slow....and it didn't block a trojan, despite being backed up regularly.
Bullguard was on my computer as a trial when I bought it and I have never had a minutes problem with it.

Thanks Margaret, I've downloaded the 60 day free trial from BullGuard, can already see a different, my LT speed seems to be quicker, and the full version is not that dear really about the same as Mcafee

Re: security problems

Glad you like it John. It is much cheaper than getting your computer fixed......and it updates very frequently too.....and you can store important stuff in their digital vault and they have live 24 hour support........absolutely brilliant.

Ya seems okay Margaret, the only thing is I still have to sort out the cock ups which Mcafee caused, which for a computer numpty like me means much hair pulling time
