My housemate pays the TV licence and skyTV in return he uses the internet, of which I pay for, as much as he likes. Fair deal id say.
Before that, when I lived on my own; I never paid it-- I didn't need to since I never used to watch live broadcasts

If just use your TV for anything but live broadcasts (video games, DVD's, BBCiPlayer like services) you don't have to.
