Question Gamepad or Joystick..or...

In the olden days we generally used the keyboard or a simple joystick for game control. Nowadays we have these huge gamepads with 8million buttons on them, whats going on? Which do you prefer and why?

You need rocket science to work them things.
Not to mention hans that work together.

I wouldn't have a clue my self.
I got conflict desert storm 2 in September just to see what these games are like.
The game its self is ok, but I never get past the first level.
I would like to know, what is the best thing to use. i.e. joy stick or what ever, at the moment me using keyboard. There are too many things to do at once. lol

I must admit that i prefer the Gamepad myself - simply because you are in total control of what happens.

There are far more options and scenario's, in which a certain degree of skill is needed.

I agree that when you first use one it's kind of confusing but even when you have managed to pick up the basics it enhances the gaming experience no end.

Definitely Joystick - Up, down, left, right & fire. Why do we need anymore than that?

I can just about control a mouse - don't expect anything more complicated. I come from the pre-PC generation.

Keyboard for me. When I was growing up I couldn't afford a joystick for my Vic-20 so my brain got used to using keys. Now its stuck that way.

Re: Gamepad or Joystick..or...

It really depends on what game I am playing.

If I am playing something like Command & Conquer or Dungeon Keeper, a mouse has to be best, because you need to be able to place something in a particular place, so a mouse is quicker.

In racing games, I use my steering wheel (force feedback, etc), as trying to steer, change gears, brake and whatever else can't be done effectively with a keyboard.

For Grand Theft Auto I use a mixture of mouse/keyboard and game pad. When I am in a vehicle, I use the gamepad, but it is far easier when the character is on foot to use the mouse and arrow keys.

So I haven't really got a hard and fast favourite, it depends on what I am playing as to what I use

It has to be mouse and keyboard but I could not pick that so went for mouse.

It's a gamepad for me too. Feels much better for all-round gaming and are generally more comfortable too.
