You need to know what type of guitar (electric, acoustic, folk etc) you want to learn and you need to have short fingernails and tough fingers.

Definitely acoustic. I've never learnt to read music though, is that bad or does it come naturally hearing the notes on a guitar?

You also need to know what type of music you want to produce. Do you want the play chords to sing along to or do you want to play recognisable tunes?

Recognisable tunes. It's something I've always wanted to do as a private hobby, no big music aspirations, I would just like to play a recognisable tune on a guitar

OK, well the first fun part is you have to be able to tune the thing but after that it's not too hard - being able to read music does help though.

If you pop into Music Box see if they have a 'Tune A Day' book 1 for classical guitar - it starts with the very basics.

reading music is hard well to me it was, its either u have a knack for it or dont LOL
