What one song says it all for you?

Mine is an early 20th century ballad: 'A Mood' It was written by the manager of the Finsbury Park Empire, E.J.Macdermott to music by Alison Travers.

A Mood

The songs of the birds in the sunshine,
The buzz of the bee, the caw of the rook,
The bleating of lambs, the murmuring brook,
Fill my soul with a deepening wonder.

The sun sinks to rest in the evening
With halo of gold, the hush of the twilight,
Sombre bright hue, heaven all starlight,
Then my soul from things earthly will wander.

The nightingale's song in the darkness,
The hoot of the owl, the chirp of the cricket,
The croak of the frog, the dim distant
Roll of the sea on the grey rocks yonder.

The songs of the birds in the sunshine,
The buzz of the bee, the caw of the rook,
The bleating of lambs, the murmuring brook,
Fill my soul with a deepening wonder.

Fits me to a tee: totally uncool, veering more and more to sentimentality and a lover of all nature. Yehaa!

Even the nasty things that happen are just experience.

Re: What one song says it all for you?

I had this song played at my wife's funeral, recorded by Willie Nelson.
I thought it rather fitting because I spent a lot of time away from home driving my tanker.
Even though I wasn't always with her she was "Always on my mind"
I asked the vicar to explain the reason I chose it to the congregation.

Maybe I didn't love you
Quite as often as I could have
And maybe I didn't treat you
Quite as good as I should have

If I made you feel second best
Girl, I'm sorry I was blind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

And maybe I didn't hold you
All those lonely, lonely times
And I guess I never told you
I'm so happy that you're mine

Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
But you were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Tell me, tell me that your sweet love hasn't died
And give me, give me one more chance
To keep you satisfied
I'll keep you satisfied

Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
But you were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

You were always on my mind

Russell just reading your post brought tears to my eyes. I can see exactly the thoughts behind your choice. I'm sure June knew it all as well.

Margaret.....I love the Peggy Lee song......it was a favourite of my dear old dad.....and Russell, your choice is one of my favourites too....but the one that really chokes me is.....'To Dance with my Father again'
If you had asked me when my father was alive, if we were close I would have answered 'not particularly'.....but this week saw the 21st anniversary of his death...and I don't think a day goes by that I do not think of him....and like Paul Mc Cartney...if I could have a time machine for an hour, I would go back and tell him of the spectacular impact he had on my life.

A recording of a 1927 poem. The words hit a spot not often used.

'Lovesick Blues' sung by Hank Williams always makes me happy.

There are many songs which take me back to a particular moment or person.

I like a lot of different music -

But one that stands out in my mind when I first heard it was "All the Young Dudes" Mott the Hoople... Bowie certainly knows how to write the classics.
