Re: What was the first record you bought?

I think it was Iron Maiden's 'Live After Death' album. I bought it for my brother for Christmas..he didn't like it and gave it me..which was my idea all along!!!

It seems that most folk from the age of vinyl cut their teeth musically, at Mary's Music.

Without You - Nielson

I already owned some platters on 78s but dont know where from. Swing low sweet chariot on 78 and loads of other... But first bought was Without You on a 45

I dunno about some not knowing what a 45/t8 is.,. I bet some have never seen a record player or cleaned the dust/fluff off a player needle

mine was I'm a hog for you baby by Screaming Lord Sutch the flip side of which was called My Monster in Black Tights. Bought it back in '63 still had it up to a couple of years ago when my son borrowed my record collection (permanently) when he went through his D.J. stage.

Re: What was the first record you bought?

August, 1964...after six months of mithering, my long-suffering parents finally give in and buy me a Dansette record player. Immediately, I rush downtown, along Broadway, into Woolies and there it is..."The Greatest Hits Of Elvis Presley". It's got a strange line drawing of old El' on the front and it's on some weird label called "Embassy" but who cares? It's only 14/6 (circa 70p) - a mere snip when compared with full-price LPs which sell for the princely sum of 32/6 (circa £1.60). I make my purchase and as I'm walking home along Blackburn Road, I take the record out of the bag to examine in it. Then I see those fatal words "...as performed by Danny Storm and the Tempests". That's when I realise my mistake - I've bought an album's worth of cover versions on Woolies' own in-house label by a singer who sounds as much like Elvis as yer average Saturday night turn at the Willow Mount.

My first record and my first record-buying lesson - always look closely before you buy!

Re: What was the first record you bought?

Well, Wynonie, a bit of a coincidence, my first record, was Elvis golden records, I bought it second hand from a boy who sat next to me in class, name Mick Sturzaker, he played in a group called the Cyclons, It was ten bob, I payed him off a bob a week.
The first new record I bought was Niel Sedaka, Breaking up is hard to do. From Mary;s record stall on Accy Market, one Sat morning, on my way home from the Baths.

Re: What was the first record you bought?

Alan, their site looks the business. Get yerself some prime R&B (that's rhythm & blues, not the soulless, synthesised garbage that masquerades under the title of R&B these days!).
