2011 Prediction League; Game 40 AFC Wimbledon (home)

Accrington Stanley

V

AFC Wimbledon

2011 Prediction League – Game 40; v AFC Wimbledon (home)

So; The Wombles went out and signed midfielder Pim Balkestein on loan from Brentford (he having previously been on loan at Coleydale). Explaining the signing, Wombles manager Great Uncle Bulgaria said this;

"He is a Dutchman who can also play a bit, but we have brought him in for his other attributes and hopefully he will provide a strong presence at the back”

Right; if I follow that, they didn’t sign him because he’s Dutch (think Neeskens, van Basten, Gullitt, Cruyff), or because “he can play a bit” , but they did sign him “for his other attributes” . Spiffin’. What are they, Terry?

They also added ex ProperWimbledon player Jason Euell, Jamaican born, now 34, and a striker (I do wonder if the words “34” and “striker” aren’t actually mutually exclusive, but we’ll see ) from the Addicks (he also counts Blackpool and Doncaster among the teams on his cv); 19 year old Sunderland midfielder Billy Knott; former West Ham centre half Callum McNaughton – also 19 - who had been on loan; Spurs and West Ham legend John Moncur’s son George, who’s an England u19 midfielder, also from the Hammers; ex Stevenage striker Byron Harrison (24) – whom Westley rated highly so who’s probably pants, bless him – who got 10 goals in 46 there, cost Wimbledon a “five figure fee” (£103.99? ) and started out at Carshalton Town; and last, and probably least, 22 year old striker Charlie Strutton, whom they signed from Southern League Division One Central side Chalfont St Peter (wasn’t he a 1960’s pop singer ), and whom they promptly loaned out to Maidenhead Town. Hmmmmmm!

Currently they’re in 15th place with a record of 39 played, 13 wins, 8 draws, 18 defeats and 47 points (so they’re safe enough with nowt much to play for, you’d think); they’re about as good (or bad) at home as they are away - home it’s W7 D4 L9 F33 A37, away is W6 D4 L9 F21 A29. Their form over the last two months has seen 3 wins, 3 draws and 5 losses (4 losses and 2 draws in their 6 away games, 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat at home); their best result was probably a 4-0 win over a very demoralised Burton side, while they’ve also beaten Bradford 3-1 and Dagenham 2-1; bad news (for them) is that they haven’t scored at all in four of those 6 away matches , losing 1-0 at Oxford, Northampton and Bristol Rovers and drawing 0-0 at Cheltenham, and they only got one at Hereford in a 2-1 defeat (although they drew 3-3 at Crewe). That’s a better spell, even so, than October through December, when they drew 3 and lost 9 of a dozen consecutive League games …..One of those losses was at home to us ; we won, you’ll recall, 2-0 (our only League meeting), with first half goals from Padraig Amond and Craig Linfield; 100% record against them, eh?

Their main goal scorer (by a street) is Jack Midson with 20 (18 in the League, putting him joint top with Izale McLeod at Barnet); now 28, Midson did the non-league scene until he came into the League (aged 26) with Oxford (having played for loads of sides including the Daggers, Histon (25 goals in 65 games) and Oxford, non-league and league, for whom he got 10 in 59); his 20 for the Wombles have come in 43 matches; before becoming a full-time goal-machine he was actually a tennis coach (Andy Murray please note! ). After him on the list come ex Ebbsfleet striker Luke Moore (23) and ex Kingstonian (and Oxted and District) midfielder Christian Jolley, each with 7

The deadline for entries is, as ever, scheduled kick-off time, which is 3pm on Saturday 31st March. Truth is that neither of us is going up (on current form – prove me wrong! ), and neither going down either, so it’s a “work on things for next season” game, mayhap ………. That said, there’s no reason not to start with 8 attackers again and see if we can score a hatful! Oh yes we can! Can't we, Wyn?

Good luck to everyone ………… and thanks for playing!

In full agreement with Mr Harris but in moderation on the score line so its a 2 - 1 win for the Stanley Boys.
