2019/20 Prediction League; Game 34 v The Boys from Up the Hill (away)

Richard, Coeur de Lion, King of England, Duke of Normandy, Aquitaine and Gascony, Lord of Cyprus, Count of Poitiers, Anjou, Maine and Nantes ruled England from 1189 until 6th April 1199 (at least he survived into the new tax year!); he was succeeded by his younger brother John, known as John Lackland, and mainly remembered for losing most of the Plantagenet lands in France (as well as his belongings in the Wash), having to sign the Magna Carta, being fond of backgammon, being 5’ 5” tall with red hair and a barrel-chest, and dying of dysentery, which he contracted in Lynn (now King’s Lynn) in 1216….. by the time he reached Newark Castle in October of that year he was unable to travel any farther, and he died on the night of 18/19 October. Numerous – probably fictitious – accounts circulated soon after his death that he had been killed by poisoned ale, poisoned plums or a "surfeit of peaches” …………………. BUT - Starter for Ten – what connects the two of them to Oxford?

About 900 AD some clever-clogs had the bright idea of setting up a crossing of the local river where people could move their oxen to the opposite bank without drowning them all; that led in turn to the location being known as “Oxenaforda” (“The Ford of the Oxen”). In the 10th century, Oxford was raided by the Danes (not the Great Danes, I should add), and in 1002 many Danes were killed in Oxford during the St. Brice's Day massacre ordered by King Æthelred the Unready. The skeletons of more than thirty suspected victims were actually unearthed in 2008 during the course of building work at St John's College. Oxford was also heavily damaged during the William of Normandy v Harold of Pevensey Cup Replay of 1066. In 1642, during the English Civil War, Charles I moved his Court to Oxenforda after being was expelled from London – not a great idea, because the town yielded to Parliamentarian forces under General Fairfax in the Siege of Oxford of 1646. Oxford also housed the court of Charles II during the Great Plague in 1665–66 – and if that wasn’t enough, the City suffered two serious fires in 1644 and 1671.

Having enjoyed Shrewsbury Gaol a week or three back, you might care to know that Oxford had a Gaol – “The Bocardo” (not to be confused with “The Bordello”) - at the North gate from the 13th Century; that one was demolished in 1781 and replaced by the Old City Gaol from 1789 to 1878; the remains of the OCG were discovered by workmen in July 1987 while excavating for a car park ………… apparently It consisted of an octagonal central building with two wings, surrounded by a 20ft high curtain wall, and had room for 32 inmates (thirty-two? Weird), but records show it was rarely full (even weirder) ……….. It’d sure as hell be full these days, if it were still in operation ……… oh, and by the way; Archbishop Thomas Cranmer and Bishops Latimer and Ridley stayed in the Bocardo in 1555/56 …………………. Prior to being burnt at the stake!

Oxenforda United were, until 1960, Headington Untied FC; in 1962, they won the Southern League title for the second successive season and was elected to the Football League Fourth Division, occupying a vacant place left by financial issues. They were promoted to the Third Division in 1965. A year before the promotion, Oxford became the first Fourth Division club to reach the sixth round of the FA Cup. They won the Third Division title in 1967–68, their sixth season as a league club, but after eight years of stability the club was relegated from the Second Division in 1975–76. At the end of the 2005–06 season, after 44 years in the EFL football, they GreasyPoled to the Bananarama, finishing in 23rd place with 49 points from 46 games, three points and some goals from safety, and four points above Rushden in Diamonds, thereby becoming the first former winners of a major trophy (League Cup) to be relegated from the league. Although this was only 13 years ago, the four sides above Oxford were Stockport, Notts Co, Torquay and Bury ……….. Coincidentally, but in a fine spirit of completing of the circle, Accie - whose “bankruptcy” in 1962 had allowed United to be elected into the League in the first place - were promoted as Bananarama Champions to replace them. Karma, if not Serendipity!

They went up to League One in 2015/16; last season they finished 12th, off a record of W15 D15 L16 GF58 GA64 with 60 points ………… for personnel changes up to our first meeting of the season see the October match thread, but since we met on 5th October they’ve ProperSigned GK Jordan Archer from Millwall on a free, and Eastleigh CB Robert Atkinson and the Rams’ DMF George Thorne (who’d been on loan at the Kassam), both for “£undisclosed” …………….. having got Archer on 6th December, they wished him the Compliments of the Season and let him go to Fulham on 16th January for what they paid for him - nowt! They also parted company with MF Oussama Zamouri, and in a BuyOneGetOneFree they sold Grenadan MF Shandon Baptiste and LW Tarique Fosu-Henry to Brentford on Breadline Day – sorry, Deadline Day ……. Bits of loans in and out – Hammers’ LW Nathan Holland, Feyenoord MF Liam Kelly and Middlesbrough AMF Marcus Browne joining up until the summer ………………….

After seven games of the season they were 20th – one win (Posh, 1-0), 2 draws (Slumberland 1-1 away and Coventrary 3-3 at home) and four defeats ………… after that, they went on a 15-game run where they only lost once (1-0 at the MK Donkeys) ……….. that run included a Desmond at our place (Clark and Zanzala). Of their last ten they’ve won three, drawn three and lost four, beating Blackpool, The Wombles and Ipswich (who lost Kaden to a red card for violent conduct on 93) ………… at home, their record is W9 D3 L3 GF28 GA12, and away it’s currently W5 D6 L6 GF25 (rather skewed by a 6-0 win at Lincoln, 5-0 against the Wombles, and 4-0 at Southend) GA22…………….. overall, then, P32 W14 D9 L9 GF53 GA34 for 51 points and 9th place (on 29th December they were 2nd) ………… they made the fourth round of the FA Cup, losing a replay against Newcastle 3-2; they also made the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup, but faltered 3-1 on the rock that is Man City; and in the Troffy they went out on pens to Exeter in Round Two (3-0, which means they didn’t even hit the target with any of their spot kicks) ………….. 14 Cup games, 26 scored, 14 conceded, giving a season-long total as at now of 79 goals in 46 games ……….. 7 blanks in the league, and 14 clean sheets in their 32 in the league ……. Leading scorers are Matty Taylor on 13, James Henry on 12, and Tarique Fosu-Henry (see “Brentford", above) on 10 ………..

Club Chairman is Sumrith Thanakarnjanasuth (that’s easy for you to say!) and First Team Coach/Asst Manager is one Derek William Fazackerley ; other managers include the Bald Eagle (Jim Smith), Ron Saunders (12 games!), Ramon Diaz (who?) for 5 months and Pep Clotet for nearly seven, and Chris Wilder (for five years), who resigned to take over Northampton (why would you do that? ………………) Big Ron Atkinson holds their all-time appearance record (560), and his late brother Graham holds “highest scorer” with 107 …………. They once paid £470,000 for Dean Windass; they’re the only team to get consecutive promotions as Champions (1983/84 Div Three to Div Two by 8 points from Wimbledon, 1984/85 from Div Two to Div One by 2 points from Birmingham); and of our last eight games we’ve won five, drawn one and lost two ……………

Deadline for entries is, as always, scheduled kick-off time, which is 7.45pm on Tuesday 25th February …………………. Bolton, Southend and Tranmere continue, happily, to lose, thus helping our position ………….. Southend have still only won three – as have Stevenage, rapidly being cut adrift at the foot of League Two (and did you know that they’ve now had more managers this season than they’ve won matches – three wins, four managers (Dino Maamria, Mark Sampson, That Nice Mr Westlife, and Alex Revell) ? AFC Fylde are at serious risk of GreasyPoling to the Bananarama North a year after being one game away from the EFL; Barrow are five points clear with 11 to play, and in the BananaNorth York have 62 from 31, and King’s Lynn (see “King John” above) have 60 from 28 ………… and the connection between Richard the Lionheart and King John Lackland and Oxford is that they were both born there at Beaumont Palace (and there’s a Plaque to prove it!) …… and having been stuffed in FergieTime against the Millers on Saturday we can now empathise with Lincoln fans for the week before – Flying Pigs we can!

And Tuesday’s ref is David Rock (and his liners are Messrs Roll, and Blackpool – no they’re not!), who’s ref’d four in League One (19 yellows and one pen) and 14 in League Two (44 yellows, one red and five penalties) …………so now you know!

Good luck to everyone!............... Keep the Faith!.............. And thanks for playing!
