2021/22 Prediction League Game 38; v The Haddocks

Starter for Ten; Tuesday night gone, Champions League "Round of 16" Second Leg In München ......... FC Red Bull SalzBurgerKing (gives you wings and indigestion simultaneously) the visitors: 1-1 from the first leg, and The Wings perhaps fancying an upset ............. You probably saw that Bayern put them to the sword (7-1 on the night), and may have seen that Robert Lewandowski - who's popped in the odd goal in his time - scored Bayern's first three goals - two penalties on 12 & 21, and a goal from open play on 23 mins ........... but what record did he break during that game? And as a follow-up, how many times have Bayern Munich scored seven or more goals in a Champions League game?

And if I asked him (so I won't) DaveInGermany would tell you that "Bayern" is the German word for "Bavaria" - a district of Germany .......... so why "Bayern Munich", given that "Munich" is the English name for "München"? Answer is laziness ....... actually, that question produced a fairly curt response online that I saw from an Austrian gentleman called Wilfried Ulamec, from Gmunden (Austria) .......... (welcome to the Forum, Wilfried)

"The answer is simple: in German it is Bayern München only. Why somebody should translate only the city and not the state into English is beyond me, though. Having said that, Bavaria Munich sounds as stupid as Arsenal London (which you sometimes read in German and Austrian newspapers)"

The name of the City in modern German is München, but this has been variously translated in different languages: English, French, Spanish and some other languages call it "Munich", in Italian it's "Monaco di Baviera" (I had that with chips, once), and in Portuguese it's "Munique" ........ well, almost munique

PS More about hat-tricks next time (if I remember!)

And back on my theme of statistics proving nothing, I give you the stats from Tuesday's Papa John's PizzaCupPizzaP1ss Semi Final........ The Mighty (?) Wigan - at home - had 71% of the play, 13 shots (3 on target) and 6 corners ............ The EFL Newby Minnows (Sutton Utd) had 29% of the play, 13 shots (6 on target) and two corners ....but Sutton had the belief, and their (ex Stanley) Aussie keeper Dean Bouzanis saved two pens in the shootout (from Max Power and, decisively, Tendayi Darikwa) and in between, buried his own penalty past Jamie Jones in the Wigan goal for a 7-6 win and a Place at Wembley .................. sorry Leam, but ........... Mwahahahahahahahahaha! ....... and Well Done Little Sutton!

Marcelo Bielsa out at Leeds I see - after 1,364 days - one year more than Ann Boleyn managed in the film "Anne of the Thousand Days" with Genevieve Bujold as Ann, Richard Burton as Fatty, and Elizabeth Taylor as a Masked Courtesan (she didn't trust Randy Burton one inch!) - to be replaced by American Jesse Marsch, who previously had spells at RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg (mentioned twice in one thread! Good going!), New York Red Bulls, and Montreal Impact: and Richie Wellens got the John Leyton Orient job (having previously managed Donnie, Salford MoneyBags, Swindon, and Oldham)

Charlton Athletic F.C. was formed on 9 June 1905 by a group of 14 to 15-year-olds in East Street, Charlton, which is now known as Eastmoor Street and no longer residential. After doing really rather well in locally-based Leagues, just after WW1 they joined the Kent League for one season (1919–20) before becoming professional, appointing Walter Rayner as the first full-time manager. They were accepted by the Southern League and played just a single season (1920–21) there, before being voted into the Football League (Division Three). Their first League match was against Exeter City in August 1921, which they won 1–0.

The club has had four separate periods in the top flight of English football: 1936–1957, 1986–1990, 1998–1999, and 2000–2007. Historically, Charlton's most successful period was the 1930s, when the club's highest league finishes were recorded, including runners-up of the First Division in 1937. After World War II, they reached two consecutive FA Cup finals, losing in 1946, and winning in 1947.

Most recently they GreasyPoled from Le Championnat in 2015/16, in 22nd place - one point above the MKDonuts and ten above Bolton, but yonks behind Rotherham ......... in 16/17 Bolton went straight back up, the Dons and the Haddocks were mid-table ........ in 2017/18 they were 6th, but failed to score in either leg of the Playoff semis against Shrewsbury ........ 2018/19 saw them finish third and win the Playoffs (beating Donnie and Slumberland) to go back up, only to do a Jack and Jill in 2019/20 .......... in 20/21 they finished 7th in Ligue Un (and outside the playoffs) on GD - on +14 to Oxford's +21 .......... in the recent Transfer Window they Proper signed striker Chuks Aneke from Brum and AMF Scott Fraser from Dad's Army - sorry, Ipswich ......... two players you'll never have heard of left permanently ............ three loans in - Dutch LB Juan Castillo and striker Mason Burstow, both from Chelski (anyone want to buy Chelski?) and CMF Nile John from Spurs ..........

They made Round 3 of the FA Cup before Norwich beat them, Round One of the EFL Cup before the Wombles beat them, and the Quarter Finals of the Troffy before Hartlepool beat them on pens after a Desmond ..... they haven't torn up League One either; out of their first ten games they won once (Crewe 2-0), drew three and lost six (which left them 23rd); their second ten finished with 5 wins, three draws and two defeats; then they won 5, drew one and lost three, and from their last six games they've taken one point (a Goalless Desmond with Sunderland) ............ home, it's W7 D4 L7, away it's W4 D3 L10 ....... overall, P35 W11 D7 L17 GF41 GA47, for 40 points and 16th place ........... they'll likely be ok - the bottom six are getting cut off somewhat - five point gap between Lincoln in 18th (38 points/35 games) and Fleetwood in 19th (33 points from 35) .... Crewe are 8 points and 20 goals from safety with ten to play and Dead in the Water ......... LackofForm champions are Burton, Charlton and Fleetwood, each with one point from their last five, and Stars of the Week are the Donuts (15pts/15), with Pompey (13 /15), Oxford (12/15) and Ipswich (11/15) chasing them down

Deadline for entries is, as always, scheduled kick-off time, which is 3.00pm (Northern Wham Time) on Saturday 12th March (soon be Michaelmas) .... We did them 3-2 chez Them in mid October - Pell, Pell and Hamilton (plus Cuthbert, Dibble and Grubb) ..... leading scorer is Conor Washington in the League (9) and Jayden Stockley overall (14)

And as for Mr Lewandowski, his three goals were the first time a Champions League hat-trick has been completed as early as the 23rd minute (although it isn't the quickest CL hat trick, that record being held by Bafetimbi Gomis with three in eight minutes for Lyons in a 7-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb in 2011) ...... And the 7-1 victory over the Wings was the seventh time Bayern have scored seven in a CL game - over twice as many times than anyone else

We may not do that many doubles this season - so Go Get 'Em, Lads!

Good luck to everyone! ............ Keep the Faith! ,,,,,,,,,, And thanks for playing!

COYR!

1-0 to the Stanley please D3N. :)

Just a little add on to your "little known facts & strange realities" Bavaria (Mama Bavaria)is also the name of the female statue with her lion that stands outside the "Ruhmeshalle" above the Theresianwiese, world renown as the site of the "Oktoberfest" ;)

Furthermore, the newest manifestation of "Bavaria" introduced to the locals was the young female bearded vulture & her partner "Wally", released into the wilds of the Berchtesgadener nationalpark in June 2021. :)

Shurm Eases Away A Tad

Four pessimists (Kiwi, Ossy Kid, Taypot and Valairian) got nowt :(, three drawmongers (AccyTom18, Lord Stiffy and LongLost) got a single bonus point :), and Monkey Hanger and Leylandii were missing in action :(. Otherwise, it was at least 3 points all round for our regulars .....

Leader Shurm took his third maxi of the season :):):):):) to increase his lead over his 3 closest pursuers to a still very skinny 3 points. Said pursuers (Cashy, Stevie R and Nige B) all took 4 :):):):) and remain separated only on countback. Below them, the gap widened, as of the next 5 only Mike A got anything at all (and only 3 :):):) at that), but another maxi went to Tommy McQueen to take him from 10th to 7th. Ange B also maxied, enough to lift her from 13th to the foot of the top table, as did Choirboy (16th to 13th), Watchdog (19th to 17th) and Mab (21st to 19th).

Nearly everybody else got 4 :):):):), so relative positional changes were relatively few.

So ... deep breath ... roll on Wednesday (finally ) on Tuesday, with us hoping  they'll think they've scored enough for this week, having put 6 past Cambridge yesterday . More would just be greedy, don't you think ;)? And surely we're due our first away point (or three) of 2022 .....

On Stanley On!!
