Ken Aston - Referee

I was looking through some old Stanley programmes over the weekend, including the last game v Crewe in 1962 and noticed that the referee for that game was a certain Ken Aston. He was quite a trailblazer in his day, introducing things such as the Black Referees Uniform, Red & Yellow Cards, Substitute Referees, Red & Yellow Flags for the linesmen. He was also the referee at the 1963 FA Cup Final & the “Battle of Santiago” game of Italy v Chile at 1962 World Cup.

Makes me wonder what such a leading light in the game was doing officiating at a 4th Division game on a Friday night.

Found it quite interesting, thought I'd share on here.

Re: Ken Aston - Referee

Certainly remember the name but didn't realise his greatest claim to fame was reffing the last league game at Peel Park.
Would have loved to have seen refs wearing tweed jackets and plus fours.

.

No, not at Peel Park, it was away at Gresty Road, Friday, March 2nd, 1962.

Jings, Wynonie, it's really set in with me. I blame the sun.
Anyway, the outcome is that Ken Aston is not the celebrity ref that I, for one, thought.

before the premier league all referees were football league referees and back in those days you could be at gresty road one week and old trafford the next. a lot of em actually officiated at every league ground.
