Killed in Action

As a Stanley fan I would like to bring to the attention of the wider sporting community the tragic death of a young marine in Afghanistan last week. David Fairbrother was a member of Pioneer 79 Swimming Club, and although from Blackburn spent much of his young life training with the club at Hyndburn Sports Centre. His mother Julie, and sisters Ruth and Emily have been associated with the club for around twenty years, and have many friends in the Accrington area.

On behalf of all Stanley fans I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to Julie and her family, and assure her that David will never be forgotten.

Re: Killed in Action

The association between this lad and ASFC seems to be one solitary supporter, but the post certainly drives home how fortunate we all are
sitting here in relative peace while some of our boys lose their lives.
199 post regarding Sean Mc Conville lets hope 199 can take a moment to think about this soldier and his family. Football is just a game in which a few earn their living.

Re: Killed in Action

Thanks for your kind words LTR. I posted this on behalf of a few swimming club members who are also Stanley fans, including some of our youngest members who regularly attend Stanley’s matchday club. Pioneer 79 also made a substantial donation to the SOS fund in season 2009/10 and Lowiey’s son Oliver has recently joined the swimming club, so the link between the two clubs may not be as tenuous as you might imagine.

David’s death has affected all our members to varying degrees and I wholeheartedly agree with you that it is at times like this we should stop and think how fortunate the majority of us are.

Re: Killed in Action

Many of us will know someone, directly or indirectly, who is a serving soldier and under daily threat of being next the subject of the next thread. On reading this thread my first reaction is one of relief that it is not someone who I know. However, from the bottom of my heart I thank all of our military personnel, and their families, for the sacrifices they make on behalf of the free world.

Leaving all politics aside this is a tragic loss of a young life and I send my sincerest condolences to his family.

It's sad when anybody dies, it's tragic when it's one so young.

R.I.P to David and sympathy to his family and friends
