Anyone else notice the dell computer Ad?
They mention the perfect gift for the holiday, not Christmas.

I think that may be more of an Americanism, Less. I have 2 friends in the States who send me Xmas cards and they always have "Happy Holidays" printed on them.

It's not on American tv though, no matter where it started, does it have to be used here?

Yes that's true Dianne. Mind you the holidays don't last long- when I worked in the States in 1973/4 it was back to work on Boxing Day!

I must admit it grates on me too. Not everyone is on holiday over Xmas anyway -there are lots of people who have to work through it!

I wonder if they actually call it Boxing day over there? Here it's always just called "Santo Stefano" -love that hymn - Good King Wenceslas...

Was always told it was Boxing day because people threw out the boxes from their presents -is this true?

It's Boxing day because that's when workers get their Christmas boxes or tips.

The name is still used in the USA.

If I was off duty, I would volunteer to work over the xmas period at the Fire Station, as long as I saw the kids open their presents I was ok, by the time I got home at the end of shift all the relatives had gone, their the ones you can't choose to spend xmas with.
cashman, mobertol and Restless like this.

The Charity boxes in the churches were emptied on the Feast of St Stephen and the proceeds were distributed to the poor...or at least that is what I have been lead to believe

Re: It's a sad sign of the times.

The church boxes does make sense.

As to working through the "holidays", I have a husband who barely takes any time off at all and he works through the lot to give the other men a day off -farm life is terribly tying.
In fact he has only taken 3 days off all year apart from 2 days after having a carpal tunnel op. in March instead of the prescribed 3 weeks total rest...then he wondered why is took longer to be right again.
(Oops forgive me - sounding off about workaholic husband again!)

For the PC brigade -insn't holiday another way of saying Holy Day?
