Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album

I have just spent a happy hour on this thread following the discussion about the numbering of the Slaters Arms on Whalley Road.

I am not going to contribute to that argument but just wanted to say that if you look at the photo of the opening of Broadway in post 64, which I believe took place in 1936, the buildings in the background, between Cobden Street and Whalley Road, were still there then. You can clearly see the Slaters Arms on the far corner, compare it with photo in post 13 and you will see the chimney stack on the roof and the boarding on the edge of the roof going up to the corner. You can also see the lamp post/traffic light pole on the corner.

This ties in with a previous post where the poster, can't remember who, said they thought the building was still there in 1937 but gone by 38.

Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album

I am saddened to say that John Kelly passed away this week after a long illness.
He was very proud of his photograph collection, not all his own work, Retlaw and Owd Bert amongst others contributed but it gave him great joy in his latter years knowing that the photo's that he had put together were being enjoyed by so many people around the world thanks to the internet and Accyweb. RIP John.

According to the Observer, John's funeral is at 1.30 today, not 1.00 as previously thought.

A good turnout at the crematorium this afternoon, the place was full, lots of firemen I hadn't seen in years,
not many left now of those who joined the brigade in the 1950's when John and I did.

just spent all afternoon reading through this thread completely hooked ,i'm perhaps younger than most people who contributed and it was great to see how Accrington was to as i know it now although, it was a shame it got hi-jacked half way through by an argument that went on for page after page after page , i got quite intrested in my own family history a couple of years ago and i couldny help but romatically wonder if any of my ancestors were in some of those photo's ,espicially the fish market photos as one of mine was a fish trader in Accrington in the 1920's by the name of Creasey

Quite possibly - my great grandad was Isaac Creasey who started the fish business and died in 1930. His stall was at the far left hand end of the fish market and it stayed in the family till my grandad died in 1959.
