Re: Does anyone remember in ossy

In the late 40s my dad's cousin's wife Gladys Rothwell ran a fruit and veg shop opposite the library. It was either next door to, or next but one to, where that pizza place is on the corner

Ps anyone know what happened to my cousin (once removed) Bobby (her son)

I'm sure that the man who ran the pet shop on Tinker Brew, near where the cab office is now, was called Bobby Rothwell. This would be about 10/15 years ago, and he'd be around your age.

I know they had children, so they might be able to confirm this.

I think it's important that our history is recorded, but it becomes harder as generations sadly disappear. As far as I know one lady, who is still as bright as a button, she certainly was the last time I saw her, is Mary Groves, mother of Jack(John), and was a friend of my grandparents, and I think your parents. She has a great memory concerning Ossy as it was.

I remember Mary well - Jack Groves was my childhood sweetheart.
He could yodel and we would sit under their privet hedge holding hands whilst he sang 'Roll along Covered Wagon Roll Along'
He was always Roy Rogers and my 1/2 cousin Christine and I used to argue about who was Dale Evans.
I am amazed that Mary is still alive - my mother would have been 100 last week

Yes she is, and still living in the same house.

The last time I saw her she was as sharp as a pin, and looked 20 years younger than she is.

When Gary said 'same house' I presumed that he meant the terraced opposite where his gran and grandad lived.

The semi at the other end of the street is where John Groves senior (the dentist, and Jack's grandad) tragically died by his own hand

Just been talking to me dad ( 89 ) and he mentioned Alan Lamb being in the shop. They were boy scouts in their younger days but seems to think his life came to a fateful end..
would anyone know?

also dad recalls coming home for lunch from Lang Bridges on his pushbike and on the way called in to see Jack Groves the dentist on the corner of Havelock St and Union Rd to pull a tooth out.. Jack asked dad if he would like the gas to which dad replied noo just pull the ****** out.. which Jack did and dad then went back to work.

Your Dad was posh, to be able to afford to have teeth by the time he was working.
