Were the holes you left not a hazard to other people?
I left the site as I found it,there was no holes and I cleared a lot of Broken glass up.
There was no need for "excavations" as the bottles I found were on the surface.
If (and that's a big 'if') I decided to have a dig, I would be responsible an fill the hole when finished.

"Treasure trove" is a bit strong
I've seen various old ("vintage") bottles selling for peanuts.
I think the key is knowing what bottles are sort after and knowing what's rubbish.
I think the site probably dates from the 1900s (more mid 1900s).

Re: Anyone know about bottles?

Interesting. They've been lying around all these years but three days after you announce your find on Accyweb someone else targets the site and starts digging holes.

Coincidence?

Re: Anyone know about bottles?

Looks like these bottles are worth little to nothing as far as cash is concerned ,I was wondering if anyone knows the best place to donate them (apart from HBC's blue box) so they can be shown as part of a history collection etc?

Some of the bottles are very dirty and some have slight damage.Remember most of these bottles are only 50+ Years old and there is no stoneware bottles just glassware

Re: Anyone know about bottles?

I thought that your bottle find might not yield much monetary value when I read some familiar names of 1950s and 60s products, but some of them have their own value -they're beautiful! Cleaned up and put in a sunny spot, they would be a nice addition to one's home. Your photo proves this

Re: Anyone know about bottles?

I had a walk to the bottle dump site today,it's a shame Mrs Explorer has said "no more [deleted] bottles" as someone has been rather busy digging the area up and unearthed some real gems (as far as bottles go).

Strange how they have left them though, their obviously looking for something other than bottles

Re: Anyone know about bottles?

Well, having the afternoon to myself,I decided to do some more bottle cleaning and these are some of the names that cropped up:-
St.Pierres Smirnoff (lovely embossed bottle )
Gordon's special dry London gin (miniatures)
Disinfectant supply ltd Preston (still going today I think)
Spa food products (???)
Palatine dairies Blackburn (milk bottle)
Blue seal vaseline (speaks for itself)
L Rose & Co Ltd (nicely embossed)
Horlick's (medium sized jar, nothing compared to the monster pictured above)
Amami (cologne ?)
Inecto (hair dye?)
Yeast vite (yeast pills?)
miniature de kuyper (cherry brandy)
Snowface (????)

Also a couple of kick up bottom wine bottles...

...Shame they hold little monetary value

Re: Anyone know about bottles?

UPDATE

Well,I've got rid of all the bottles,I decided to give them to our pegs nephew minus a few that I'm going to keep for decoration purposes.
I hope he has more luck getting shut of them than I did,I couldn't give the ruddy things away ....

...Any ideas for a new hobby? I've been thinking of getting a metal detector,I'm sure Mrs E will love that

Re: Anyone know about bottles?

for those who are interested

Here is a collection of old dutton brewery beer bottles I decided to keep before giving the bulk away.
Really, they should be in Blackburn museum as they are a part of local history but, they wasn't even interested when I went over and said I'd donate them
So,I'm going to keep them for when I decide to retire
