Whether it is named after a family or an individual, I feel it is most likely that the Peels had some influence in the naming. Without researching it , I think it may be that the Peels owned the land...

Next you should get into the tree of the Barneses who owned the land off Abbey Street and gave their name to Barnes St.

The first occupant of the cemetery was William Barnes of Accrington House, who was buried 10th October 1864 aged 48. As there was no Accrington newspaper at this time, his burial will likely be found...
