Crawford Lake 5

Crawford Lake 5

One of my favourite places to be, and I've been waiting all summer to get there! It's very special - a 'meromictic' lake which means the lake's basin is deeper than its surface area. The lowest levels of water are very rarely, if ever, disturbed by wind or temperature changes. There is little oxygen present in its depths and minimal bacterial breakdown. This preserves the layers of sediment and an accurate record of human settlement (the agricultural history of local Iroquoi). Simply put, it's deep, cold and very peaceful.
