Bill was Professor of Economic Geography at Glasgow University until his recent retirement. He was one of the class of 54 at Accrington GS which produced 5 professors, and other notable academics. It was said to be the best year academically that AGS ever produced. After AGS, he studied at St Peter's College,Oxford, where he gained his D Phil with a study of the Lancashire Cotton Industry.
