Has anyone ever wondered why we have charities? Why the government is actively promoting voluntary service?
Don’t get me wrong – I think that all the many thousands of volunteers who do stalwart work for no financial reward are the real salt of the earth but I ask – should they be needed? Obviously yes because they are here. But why do we have all the various charities?
We have charities because the public has identified a need that is not addressed by the government in office and decided to do something about it themselves rather than wait years for something to be done.
But hang on a minute we citizens pay our taxes and the government collects those taxes to tend to the population’s needs. So what has gone wrong?
If the government financed the operation of the RNLI (totally funded by public subscription) RSPCA, NSPCC, cancer research and thousands of other charitable works they wouldn’t be able to waste OUR money on projects that do not benefit the general public in this country. So when a need is identified the government drags it’s collective heels in the full knowledge that if they procrastinate for long enough we will get fed up waiting and do something about it ourselves by forming a charity and funding it through voluntary contributions.
Sadly we are our own worst enemy.
