My thought on that are simply that I wouldn't like people to feel like second class members if they weren't able to contribute. You may argue that they can afford a PC and internet connection, but they may be members of several message boards and not really in a position to contribute to their running costs.
Having an "invisible thank you" is a way round it and the karma one seems like a good idea. I still think tit-for-tat reducing of karma isn't a valid reason even if they target the correct person. If someone takes karma because they disagree with a point I make (such as the time I lost a point for posting "free parking" as being an Accy asset) it wouldn't make sense for me to take karma from them unless I disagreed strongly with a point they made. Just taking it because they took it from me is silly, but at least taking it from the right person would be a slight improvement on taking it from the person one presumes took it from them.
