Re: Now you see it, now you don't.
Perhaps that's what people want. After all most people do a weekly shop at the supermarket instead of supporting small independents.
We can't really complain, when once thriving town centres are places little more than highstreets full of estate agents and hairdressers, and not a green grocers or butchers to be seen. |

Listed as a planning application on HBC's website " change of use from retail shop to Amusement Centre" and you talk about nails in coffins  |
Re: Now you see it, now you don't.
I've seen it happen in the towns ouside London.
Places like Brentwood in Essex. Twenty years ago it had the requisite butcher, baker and candlestick maker. Now they just have estate agents, mainly due to the success of the relatively nearby Bluewater shopping mall. |

There is some one out there that thinks he/she will make more money changing the use of a shop on Broadway from retail to Amusements |
Re: Now you see it, now you don't.
....and what do we get in Accrington?
More propsed retail spaces near Scaitcliffe House, whilst we still have newly built empty shops on Broadway. |

Look at the Earl Transport saga, first HBC turn the application down because of the noise element, then when it comes up before the planning for a 2nd time they give it the yes, and 24 hour operating at that. |
Re: Now you see it, now you don't.
Don't forget all the shops in Ossy where you can get a tan (now that you can't get an all-over orange from the brook anymore). We moan about not having such shops, but it is largely our fault - we chose to shop at the supermarkets, to the detriment of the little shops, and now we are paying the price. There are only two butchers in Ossy now, and how many of us use them? - or just nip down to Asda or the market? I must admit I use the market but I do make a point of using my local butcher for some things. The market is a great resource for meat, fruit and vegetables, cheese, etc, most of which I'd rather get from there than some faceless supermarket. The shopping experience takes longer, but is far better, because there are all the stallholders to chat to. There used to be a thriving fishmarket, but now there are only two fish stalls - because people stopped buying. If we want little shops, we have to be prepared to use them, rather than save a bit by going to the supermarket.
