At a place I used to work we used to go out for lunch on a Friday and take a stroll across the stream to the pub on the other side. The times when we were sat in there and we would see them on the sides of the stream.

They could have been water rats or, more properly, water voles. They don't invade property like rats do and they are vegetarians. We have a lot of them on the banks of the canal here and they look very similar to the rat but their tails are furry, though thin. They are an endangered species.

I have a Pestclear plug in repeller that repels (not kills) mice rats gerbils guinea pigs and all crawling insects - including spiders - it works

""Pestclear 2000 Insect Repeller

Pestclear 2000 also known as Pest Stop 2000 repellent unit.

If you want to deter and repel spiders, the UK and Europes top selling Pest Repeller, the Pest Clear or Pest Stop 2000 repellent unit is an effective plug in electric pest repeller to prevent crawling insects such as spiders, ants, cockroaches, woodlice, earwigs and many other insects entering the home, as well as being a part of effective rat and mouse control. There is also a setting on this plugin bug and insect repellent to deter mosquitos in the room where the repeller is positioned.

The Pestclear 2000 is a combined Ultrasonic and electromagnetic pest and bug repeller and deterrent, suitable to treat an infestation in an average sized house of up to 2000 sq.ft. The plug in spider electric insect repeller is inaudible to the human ear and will not affect cats, dogs, fish or birds.

Simple and most effective electronic pest control - Just select the required settings, plug in, and the Pestclear 2000 repellent for spiders will do the rest.

This ultra sonic repellent unit is also a humane pest control method.

I bought another one for a friend recently on ebay for £24.99.
There are cheaper ones that emit sound only but you need one in each room of that type

The man in the flat below me goes off to his caravan for weeks on end in the summer. He got mice in from the woods at the back. They came up into my bathroom via the drains duct. My cat who doesnt play out (too old) presented me with a mouse one day. I traced the holes they were using and used loads of Polyfilla blocking them. I have always had spiders due to the trees back and front. This pestclear has cured both problems. I dont waste time clearing cobwebs every week now.
