'All Eyes on Ossie' DVD.

We had a real treat to watch today, after a enoying a big family New Year's Day lunch.

Someone had loaned my brother a DVD of a film made by Accrington Cine Club in 1976.

It was of a trip organised by Oswaldtwistle Civic Society, mainly the two stalwarts of the club Winnie Hogan, and her sister Benita Moore, and filmed by Benita's husband Gordon.

They took an Accy double decker bus to various places in and around Ossy.

There is the Plantation before it became the Foxhill Nature Reserve. The Straits looks like a WW II bomb site, before most of it has now been restored. You can even get to see Gayle's house.

The coke ovens/fairy caves, Stanhill Post Office, Stanhill Hall, Knuzden Hall, Rough Hey, Peel Fold, are all visited and featured. Tom Proctor's prize winning garden is shown, next to his old farm at Hoyle Bottom.

They have lunch at the Stop and Rest, when Jim and Barbara Lucas was mine hosts.

1976 was the scorching hot summer, and it shows hundreds of children cooling off in the paddling pool in Rhyddings Park, and even more people bathing up Town Bent, which was known locally as Little Blackpool.

There are interviews with some old characters, most of whom are now long dead, about why people should visit Oswaldtwistle.

Sadly there's very little of the town or Union Road featured. Whilst the bus goes up the road, the people on the bus are filmed eating ice creams, and trying to fan themselves in the heat.

It's amazing how only thirty odd years ago there was so little traffic on the road, compared with today.

Anyone interested in Oswaldtwistle or local history should keep an eye open for this film. It's only 20 minutes long, but is very entertaining.

I had one of those DVD's but ended up letting someone buy it from me. I should have got two at the time.

There's a quote on the cover from 2006, so it might still be available to buy, though I don't know where from.

Re: 'All Eyes on Ossie' DVD.

It belonged to a friend of a friend of my brother's, but I will try and find out where they aquired it.

Sadly we had to give it back, after letting the son of Tom Proctor, and an Ossy butcher watch it.

Re: 'All Eyes on Ossie' DVD.

I can't help with the DVD but I'm puzzled over Winnie Hogan's sister "Benita". Before I went to Paddock House, in 1954, I was in the same class at St Mary's as Winnie's sister - and her name was Kathleen. I think there was a brother (Danny?) but I didn't know of another sister. Was she much younger?

ossylass 01-03-2009 22:13

Re: 'All Eyes on Ossie' DVD.

I don't think that Winnie Hogan and Benita were related - Benita and I were at UMIST in Manchester together for a year, studying for our library qualifications, and her maiden name was Houston, then Moore after she married.

garinda 01-03-2009 23:01

Re: 'All Eyes on Ossie' DVD.

I think you're right, and I was wrong.

They were just friends through the Civic Society.

Benita does have a sister, but it wasn't Winnie Hogan.

They have a copy in Rhyddings School Library. My Dad is a teacher there and he borrowed a copy. I didnt see it though. He did ring me to tell me that my Grandma is in it.:)

I'll have to ask him to borrow it again.

Kathleen was winnies sister she still lives in Ossy, Danny lives in Rishton, and there was another brother called Jim, who lives on the cast somewhere, maybe St. Ann's, he was a fireman and an ex-Labour councillor in Ossy, there wasn't another sister, The only Benita I know was Benita Moor, who lived in Rising Bridge until she died a few years ago

Re: 'All Eyes on Ossie' DVD.

I knew of Benita Houston who later became Moore.
I also know of Jim Hogan who was self employed as a builder/plumber who lived in a gable end house on a corner adjoining Catlow Hall St

Re: 'All Eyes on Ossie' DVD.

I'd love to see it again. I did watch it when they put it on at the area council meeting but I didn't think it showed our house - it gives a tantalising glimpse down Mill Hill and then cuts to the entrance of Foxhill Nature Reserve - to be able to have filmed that bit they must have been stood in our garden.

I'd love to see it again. So, yes, if someone can get a copy it would be good fun.

Benita Moore used to work at the library, a real character in her own right! I bet one of me Dads friends Bertha Booth, might have been on the video, though i've never seen it. She was one of the old characters of Ossie and i know Benita "interviewed" her for one of her books. Both passed away some time back.

Best Regards - Taggy

I think that Benita had a sister, can't remember her name, but I'm sure she lived near where Rindi lives now.

I have got several of Benita Moore's books and thoroughly enjoyed them. Is the Winnie Hogan that is mentioned the same Mrs Hogan who used to teach enviromental studies at Mount Carmel?

Got it in one magily sadly no longer with us

So was I right about Winnie Hogan teaching enviromental studies. Did she pass on as well as Benita Moore? I used to love Mrs Hogan lesson she was always so interesting. If it is the same Mrs Hogan what did she do as I seem to think she left Mount Carmel even when I was there 77-82.

You were there at the same time as me. Although I was at the Paddock site when I started then it joined with Holy Family in my third year.

Would I know you?

Winnie would turn in her grave, it was MISS HOGAN magily, she never married:D

magily 05-03-2009 16:54

Re: 'All Eyes on Ossie' DVD.

I am surprised she was never married, even as an 11yr old in her class she always struck me as an interesting woman. Please tell me what you know of her, for some reason I never forgot her, she always fascinated me, I loved her class.
