My partner is often on the computer at 2.30 AM, or even later, because he works shifts, should I tell him he's not allowed to? :D

We all have different lifestyles Bondi, and we're not all 9 to 5 people. People do what they want, when they want.

Union Road, opposite the co-op, block further down from the library.

I don't remember a tripe shop there myself. I don't know how many years ago it was.

I can't remember the shop on your list being a tripe shop. Must be before my time. In the late sixties/early seventies it was the Rentifusion telly shop.

I do remember a wet fish shop across the road, which used to be Clayton's, and before that was Bob *******'s shop, a lovely old chap, whose name escapes me, but I think it was Scottish, and I'm sure someone else will fill in his name.

He was interviewed in Benitta Moore's book 'Gobbiners'.

I missed out the tv shop on my list
I think the lady who ran the tripe shop was called Annie Crawshaw or Cronshaw.
Bob Campbell had the wet fish shop across the road

I've just asked picked my mum's brains, and it was Crawshaw's.

They had a daughter who was called Pat, a 'very bonny girl', who'd be around sixty five now.

Some time ago i asked the question WHAT HAS CHANGED IN OSSY
After reading various posts it really does seem that nothing has changed
to people living in Ossy.
For people living overseas even small changes are very noticeable
I did not know the CO OP has been moved down Union Road opposite to where the Tripe shop was
Even small changes can affect your memory of how things were

Personally I think it was a shame that they demolished the main Co-op, apparently we also had at least three more smaller Co-ops too.

It was a grand old buliding, and Ossy Co-op was at one time famous for paying the highest 'divvy' in the country.

Its was a bit lower down than that Bernie, the left hand corner of Collier Street, the fancy dress costume shop was Louy Parks Furnishing who moved there from what was the old CO-OP shop that was on the opposite side of the road just lower down than the clinic. there were loads of grocers shops in those days there was Duckworths where the launderette is just across from the Civic Theatre, then higher up (now Owen and Ewing's Insurance, and once the Steak Bar) was Jimmy Gorrels, and of course Rileys at the top end of Ossy, and a little one on the opposite side of the road next to the paper shop, the woman who had it was Madg Wilson, she was my mate Lefty's Aunt

There was one on Catlow Hall St, at the bottom of Fielding Lane, and one up Stanhill. I can't remember where the other one was, maybe the West End.

The one at the bottom of Fielding lane was never a coop, I lived nearby on Hornby St (as did your dad and family) - it was a privately owned grocery

There was that grocer....and a fruit veg and fish(next to the phone box - opp corner)
an ironmonger(where chippy is now)
a clogger/shoe repairs(in a hut on the side street)
I dont remember a baker, but the smell of fresh bread was about because of the Continental Bakery (where garage is now)

I've had to phone my Ma up for confirmation that there was a Co-op on Catlow Hall Street, and she said there definitely was. She used to push me in there in my pram, and once took back some spuds back because they were bad, and was given a refund by the bald headed manager.

She also remembers getting Co-op stamps in there. It was on the opposite corner to where the chippy is, attached to what's now the garage, and they now make conveyer belts in there.

Incidentally what's now the garage used to be Continental Bakers, and before that it was the Co-op bakery.

Other small Co-ops in Ossy were over the West End, up New Lane, over on Harvey Street, and the one up Stanhill, which is now the first house up after the James Hagreaves memorial gardens.

I also had to listen about what became my Dad's old disco being the old Co-op shoe shop, across the road being the Co-op hardware shop, managed by Tony Perkin's mum. As well as the grocers, tailors, furniture store and butchers, and the function room, which were all part of the main Co-op building.

I deserve a 'divvy' for having to listen to all that.:D

Oh finally, there was another Co-op in Ossy, in what's now the Furniture Clinic.

Re: Does anyone remember in ossy

That coop must have arrived after I left in 1961
My memories are from 1942 - 61 (before your arrival :D)
But I do remember it as a bakery before it went Continental - I recall watching the big dough mixing/kneading bowls in use - the workers let a few kids in to watch.

That did cross my mind.

We lived in my grandparent's old house from '63-'67 before moving up Stanhill.

I've mentioned earlier that at one time Ossy Co-op paid out the biggest dividend in the whole country.

My grandparents used to tell me tales that 'divvy day' was like the Wild West, with people staying off work, and running up the road to spend their share of the Co-op's profits in one of the town's many pubs...if they hadn't signed the pledge.:D

I'm afraid being born in 1965 means I can't go way back.

I do know that what's now my brother's shop, and before that my dad's, and granddad's, who bought it in 1945, used to be Sam Boot's bakery, and before he aquired just before the Great War it had been a chip shop.

Re: Does anyone remember in ossy

In the late 40s my dad's cousin's wife Gladys Rothwell ran a fruit and veg shop opposite the library. It was either next door to, or next but one to, where that pizza place is on the corner

Ps anyone know what happened to my cousin (once removed) Bobby (her son)

I'm sure that the man who ran the pet shop on Tinker Brew, near where the cab office is now, was called Bobby Rothwell. This would be about 10/15 years ago, and he'd be around your age.

I know they had children, so they might be able to confirm this.

I think it's important that our history is recorded, but it becomes harder as generations sadly disappear. As far as I know one lady, who is still as bright as a button, she certainly was the last time I saw her, is Mary Groves, mother of Jack(John), and was a friend of my grandparents, and I think your parents. She has a great memory concerning Ossy as it was.

I remember Mary well - Jack Groves was my childhood sweetheart.
He could yodel and we would sit under their privet hedge holding hands whilst he sang 'Roll along Covered Wagon Roll Along'
He was always Roy Rogers and my 1/2 cousin Christine and I used to argue about who was Dale Evans.
I am amazed that Mary is still alive - my mother would have been 100 last week

Yes she is, and still living in the same house.

The last time I saw her she was as sharp as a pin, and looked 20 years younger than she is.

When Gary said 'same house' I presumed that he meant the terraced opposite where his gran and grandad lived.

The semi at the other end of the street is where John Groves senior (the dentist, and Jack's grandad) tragically died by his own hand

My great grandparents Walter and Agnes Jones lived on Ash Street for about forty years.

My mum, grandma and aunt lived with them as well, from about 1949-58.

She was Yvonne Owen then.

If your mum was Yvonne Owen , you must be related to the Cowell family who lived in Kay street and then White Ash Lane
Lillian,Harrold,Harry John Ann & Sandra
I remember Mr,s Jones,as not having any teeth ,but she was quite capable of eating a Granny Smiths,no trouble
Was your aunt Rosalind Stot?

Yes my mum was Yvonne owen, sister of Rosalind, and daughter of Lillian, one of the seven Jones girls. My grandma was actually christened Lily, but thought it wasn't glamorous enough, hence Lillian.:p

My grandma's sister Mabel married Harry Cowell, who had the children you listed.

As well as eating Granny Smiths apples, my great grandma Jones could also crack nuts with her gums!:D

It's a small world. PM me your real name, as I'm sure my mum will remember you. I've heard so much about those times, because she has a very good memory, I almost feel as if I was in the Ash Street Gang myself.:p

I just about remember them living on Whiteash Lane, in the house you bought. They then moved to a farm at Hapton, which is now a restaurant, and whose name escapes me.

As you'll probably remember my aunt Ros lived at number 18. She sadly died four years ago this September.

If there is outdoor seating you may see me there.
I think I seriously slipped up when I named a topic for the current photo comp.
I should have said 'Public Seating in Hyndburn' so that I could have more choice and know what they look like before I go.
