Top medium quits saying, ‘I was deluded’

'James Byrne’s style of mediumship ensured “sold out” notices outside all the large venues at which he regularly demonstrated for almost 30 years.

He even filled the London Palladium – following in the psychic footsteps of the late Doris Stokes. He made TV appearances, was a regular on radio phone-in shows, and wrote a book with John Sutton about his life and work: The Psychic World of James Byrne.

He has shared the platform in Spiritualist churches and public halls with other mediums and has even been dubbed “the medium’s medium”.

But those days are over. Incredibly, Byrne has not only turned his back on Spiritualism, claiming that he has been deluding himself and others, but intends exposing other psychics and their “tricks”.

Ironically, Byrne made headlines in 1997 when a group of clergymen tried unsuccessfully to get a local council to ban his demonstration of mediumship at Oswaldtwistle Civic Theatre.'

Does this mean members of HBC will now apologize and admit collective guilt for aiding and abetting a fraud on local citizens by allowing this charlaton use of a publicly owned building

I think that probably depends on who was the ruling party at H.B.C. in 1997.

Still, at least he was an original charlatan, and not some second rate tribute licky-likey, and as we all know, all publicity is good publicity.

:rolleyes::D

The thread is about the medium and not the venue - I was expecting it to turn into an excuse to bash HBC. We can start a bashing HBC thread if you like, it is fun

'Councillors at Hyndburn leisure services committee meeting last night rejected a plea to stop performances by Mr Byrne and other psychics in council halls.
The clergymen included the Rev Richard Priestley, of the Oswaldtwistle Christian Institute, the Rev Michael Ratcliffe of St Paul’s, Oswaldtwistle, and the Rev Kevin Logan of Christ Church, Accrington.
…They said shows such as his were spiritually and emotionally damaging to vulnerable people, and said they had had to counsel people who had been to mediums.'

http://barthsnotes.wordpress.com/2006/10/18/top-uk-psychic-recants/

Even though I personally think it's a load of old nonsense, similar to most religions, it's interesting how the local Christian church tried to silence those who don't share similar beliefs, and tried to deny the freedom to attend, those people who believe in, and are members of spiritual churches.

Well done H.B.C. say I. Whoever was in charge at the time.

I'm not being uppity (honest), but it is about the venue.

That's why I put it in the Ossy thread.

The only connection he has to the area is that he made national headlines, when some local churches tried to stop his appearance at the Civic Theatre.

Neil 01-02-2010 11:48

Re: Top medium quits saying, ‘I was deluded’

I do agree on the nonsense part and the Church part. Neither can be proven so if you ban one as being a con then you should ban the other for the same reason.

'But leisure services chairman Ian Ormerod said: "The council is in principle opposed to censorship and people should be able to make their own choice as to whether to attend these functions.'

'I'm getting L coming through, quite strongly!'

'Lorna, Linda, Lesley, lesbian, Lancashire, loony'

'Am I connecting with anyone in the audience?'

'You're Les?'

'I'm getting a very urgent message for you, a warning, from the other side.'

'Just give your credit card details to my lovely asssistant, who's passing amongst you, and I'll pass on your message from the dark side.'

I'm a bit confused by the article - he says he's given it all up because he heard a voice. Now, forgive me if I'm wrong but isn't that the whole point - these spiritualists and psychics hearing voices? So, if he heard a voice that means he does believe in it all, yet he's denouncing it as fake. But if it's fake then how is he hearing voices?

In my recent research into out of body experiences* I am convinced that there are such things as ghosts, but attempting to contact them is inadvisable.

Maybe he has now realised this, and admits falsifying contact at times.
He got an audio message from an evil entity, which is how he realised the dangers.

Re: Top medium quits saying, ‘I was deluded’

I remember seeing Derren Brown live in Colne - part of his act was to show how spiritualists and mediums are a con, and anyone receptive to suitable signs can steer a conversation to make it sound like they are talking to departed loved ones. He was quite insistent that everything that was about to happen was simply manipulation and trickery - there were no spirits in the room that were speaking to him.

He got a random (allegedly) audience member to come up and start talking about someone, she described the name of the person, his appearance, university and lifestyle and correctly identified the timing and manner of his death.

When she sat down he told the audience he was a good friend of that person at university and explained why he'd been keener than usual to assert that it's all cr*p - his friend's parents were in the audience and had given him permission to incorporate it in his act. They confirmed that everything the girl had said about their son was right.

I hope that's not our new moderator that you're talking about. You know it's against the rules to make disparaging comments about moderators? :D

According to his agent...
'James has recently taken a short break in his theatre work due to the expansion of his family but now returns with his brand new show “An Audience with” James Byrne.'
Nigel Round Management - Hayley Tamaddon, Frank SideBottom, Ted Robbins, UK Celebrity Appearances, UK | Psychics | James Byrne

Though you'd have to be psychic to know how long a break it'll be.
