MR ADRIAN SHURMER, author of "Shurmer's Official Guide of Hyndburn".
can't remember his first name but he was a driving instructor apparently and back in the day he wrote the guide to Accrington books (the little red things) Apparently he took the concept further and led the way for doing them for all other towns. Maybe.

If they were all strung out along Eastgate some of the buses could end up quite a way out of the town centre. I'm not so sure it's all that good an idea.

Council chiefs have earmarked land bordered by Union Street, Edgar Street and School Street for the site of an indoor bus station. Designs for the new bus station are being drawn up so that work can start by 2006. still waiting!!! |

re: MR ADRIAN SHURMER, author of "Shurmer's Official Guide of Hyndburn".
question ....whats was wrong with the original bus station on the side of the Market Hall ? are there so many accidents that it is unsafe ? seem to remember that it was wide enough for three bus bays ( Black Dog-Clayton, on the side next to the Market Hall , Haslingden route buses in the middle and the green Blackburn corporation buses on the other side near to Garth Dawsons , plus other stops for Accy corporation bus routes )
if it aint broke ......dont fix it .......  |
re: MR ADRIAN SHURMER, author of "Shurmer's Official Guide of Hyndburn".
They already did fix it steeljack. That's why it's now broke!
They took half of it away and have built the new outside market there. Where the old outside market was is now a block of shops. The buses are all over the place and there's never enough room to fit them in. Some are up Infant Street, some have to stop to let people off and then lurk around before they can pull into their bus stops for people to get on. The Fern Gore bus drops people outside Garth Dawsons when it comes into town but to catch it to come back up Fern Gore you wait outside the chemists near the top of Peel Street (which is also the Manchester bus stop and the Blackburn hospitals bus stop!) Oh yes, and some are on Bank Street. |

Adrian was (and still is, I suppose :) ) my best mate's dad when we were growing up together in Harwood. His son was the best man at my wedding. I haven't seen his dad for a year or so as I don't get home much but I think he's still doing OK.

I think Adrian's guide will be around a long time after he has departed this earth, I still use mine to this day

Adrian has sadly died (didn't see in the thread). There is a memorial bench to him on the footpath near to the bottom end of Gt Harwood Golf Club near to the disused railway line.
The story from some 20 years ago was that Hyndburn Council used his maps without permission and had to pay a royalty (This was a long time before he went on the council). The guide was pretty unique in that a Street location was given as "off Birtwistle Street" and then the house number on Birtwistle Street that it was alongside was given. |

re: MR ADRIAN SHURMER, author of "Shurmer's Official Guide of Hyndburn".
I used to find Adrian Shurmer's Guide extremely useful in my earlier years as Local Land Charges Officer at Hyndburn Borough Council - I did the job for 25 years up to my retirement. Hyndburn didn't publish its own street guide so Shurmer's came in very handy! Re earlier comment about the mayoralty being given as a political sweetener rather than earned - I hope that's not true in my case!! Judith Addison - current Mayor of Hyndburn

re: MR ADRIAN SHURMER, author of "Shurmer's Official Guide of Hyndburn".
Today I am visiting Mrs Shurmer with a welfare officer from the Retired Bobbies to help her dispose of a lot of copies of Adrian's book on driving, which is held in high regard by Advanced Drivers. I shall pass onto wer all the good wishes for Adrian expressed on here.

I really wish our moderators could alter the heading which states "that Shurmer chap" - please could you not amend it to say MR ADRIAN SHURMER, author of "Shurmer's Official Guide of Hyndburn".
I have "flinched" ever since that heading was used. |

Well done Atarah and Mick.....I have arranged for the stock of copies of 'Mind How You Go' to be collected by the Marie Curie Foundation, so they will be going on sale in their shops soon. Other copies will be going to local charities.

Re: MR ADRIAN SHURMER, author of "Shurmer's Official Guide of Hyndburn".
Adrian certainly was in the Lancs.Police, I knew him when he was at Accrington and at H.Q. Driving school. Last I heard of him, he was teaching some of the Man.Utd. team in defensive driving.

Re: MR ADRIAN SHURMER, author of "Shurmer's Official Guide of Hyndburn".
Adrian was much liked and admired by his colleagues and supervisors.
