Rules???
Due to some people's opinions of other peoples ideas, would Atarah like to lay down rules as to who or what can be put into the hall of fame, then we don't have to have derogatory comments made about other peoples entries, when nobody has made them about theirs??!!!
|
Re: Rules???
You certainly could'nt accuse me of making derogatory comments, Savo, but I must admit I'm rather baffled why anyone who's been seen on t'telly kicking a ball around a grass pitch should be inaugriated into the local "Hall of Fame".
|
Re: Rules???
Atarah, many apoligies if this is out of turn. But - read the front page - these are your own words.

Re: Rules???
I know, I know, but .. I wasn't planning on all this info. re Accy Stanley
|
Re: Rules???
But Atarah there are a lot of famous players and ex players at Accy stanley
|
Re: Rules???
So delete the accrington stanley thread and make a post with the rules and what you would like included in this section. People are clearly not fully aware of what you would like in this section. Make it clear and then lay down the law :)
|
Re: Rules???
In fairness to Atarah, there is a whole forum devoted to Accrington Stanley further down the list and I think she could be forgiven for considering that it would not stray over here. Incidentally Tealeaf, when did you last see Accrington Stanley on t'telly? Also, I'm not knocking Stanley, or the sport (which I happen to like), but how many 'famous' current players are known outside of the Stanley fanbase? I think to be considered 'famous' one should be known to people outside of the Hyndburn boundary.

Re: Rules???
Hi John...well, to be fair, Stanley were on telly at least 4 times this last season, including being on BBC1 live at one O'Clock on Sunday afternoon when they beat Huddersfield in the FA cup. (on telly, in fact, more than some of the 2nd & 3rd division clubs) However, I agree with your point that we should keep the Stanley stuff in the Stanley section...maybe they could have a "Stanley Hall of Fame"..
|
Re: Rules???
wouldnt that be a bit useless thouhg, this forum is hardley striving with threads, and isnt accrington stanley in accrington?
|
Re: Rules???
Hi Tealeaf,
I had no idea that non-league clubs were shown on t'telly. We learn a little every day. Hi ASF, No-one is trying to dispute the importance of Accrington Stanley either to their fans or to the town. But there is a full forum devoted just to them so, in my opinion, I don't see the need to have another thread going which is in a less specific forum. I don't really know what you mean about "striving with threads" nor do I understand your point about Accrington Stanley being in Accrington. Perhaps you could elucidate. |
Re: Rules???
well it isnt the busiest of forums and to be honest accringto is only famous for 3 things.
Accrington Stanley Nori well maybe 2. so it seems logical that some of the things are going to be about accrington stanley, i dont really see any point in this forum but seens its here ill post my point of view in it. in the section devoted to accrington stanley you couldnt just make a random post saying "accrington stanley are brilliant" cause thatd probley be classed as spamming, but in this forum its what your meant to do as i understand. (not spam, point out whats good bout accrington) |
Re: Rules???
I think you do the town a great disservice saying they are only famous for two things. For a start, Terylene was first produced at Broad Oak Printworks in the 1940's and a certain Mr. Hargreaves invented the "Spinning Jenny" about 170 years prior to that. Friends of the Accrington Pals may also take exception to your statement.
However, you are, of course, entitled to your opinion. I would also venture to say that anything which is classed as 'spam' in one forum would be classed exactly the same in another. |
Re: Rules???
Hi John,
Non league games normally ain't shown on telly....but since Sky have outbid terrestrial for the Premiership, BBC & ITV have more or less had to make do with highlights, or the lower divisions for live games. The Stanley v Huddersfield game was chosen because someone at the BBC smelt an upset...anyway, Stanley got 50 thou out of it.... Right, Accy Stan.....you say Accy is famous for Stanley & for Nori bricks and nowt else. Well, I've lived away for 30 years and you're quite right - when you say you're from Accy, the reply is Stanley! - but it is a reply accompanied by a big grin, because like it or not, it's regarded as a joke. I always attempt to point out the error of this sentiment, sometimes successfully, sometimes not (some people I've met actually think the name is a fiction, made up for the milk advert)....but that's just in the UK. Outside of the UK, of all the people I've met (non-British) who've heard of Accy, then these appear to be the main reasons: Howard & Bulloughs (Asia) Tiffany Glass (USA) Pals (Australia) So please don't delude yourself about the fame of Accy Stanley - in the UK, yes - but only then because of glorious failure. |
Re: Rules???
Nice to see that it's started off a debate about what accy's famous for. That's more like it!!! :D
P.S. Don't forget Hollands Pies ;) |
Re: Rules???
sorry if ive missed any biggies off such as the accrington pals (and if theyre not they should be in here) but all i was trying to point out is that Stanley is a big part of how famous accrington is.
Tealeaf, i know what ya mean about the grin and remembering the advert and all that but a lot of people i talk to about stanley are usually older people who always say "i remember when they went bust" which was before my time but it was obviously big news at the time. |
Re: Rules???
I think it's always very sad when teams go bust. Especially those teams which were in at the beginning of the whole shebang. So yes, I think it was big news when they went bust. Having said all that, I am not all that familiar with their history, did they ever win anything of note like the FA cup or the league, even in the early days?
|
Re: Rules???
I've read all the posts in this thread and I think if we have an Accrington Hall of Fame it has to include anyone connected to Accrington even if there is a Stanley connection, otherwise please call it "Atarahs Hall of Fame Only", and ban anyone else from making post in that section.
|
Re: Rules???
Also Atarah for the record Brett Ormerod is famous for being a premiership footballer for Southampton and coming from Accrington. Mike Duxbury for playing for Manchester Utd and coming from Accrington, is what most people know them for so where is the Stanley connection.
|
Re: Rules???
You need to ask what you mean by "fame".......in the context of Atarah's thread, I would suggest that "fame" is that recognised at at National or even International level....in that respect, "Accrington Stanley FC" - in either it's old or it's reincarnation mode - fulfills the criteria. However, as regards it's current or recent players - however good they are - then it is self-dellusion to believe that they are good enough or well known enough to get into a "Hall of Fame". Sorry guys - you've got to face the facts.
The same applies to players who originate from Accy....I've simply never heard of the guys above (however good they may be). Admitidly, I not a footy fanatic...but I can still recognise the major players on the pitch; and Brett, I'm afraid, is not a major name.Lets get rid of this small town mentality and think big, eh? |
Re: Rules???
Ok Tealeaf enough of trying to wind people up we get the drift that you are not at all interested in football, you stick to your rugby union. The best way would be for Atarah to keep adding her own list of "famous People" to the hall of fame and then let people decide for themselves if they deserve to be listed.
|
Re: Rules???
I can't let this pass without comment we can have womens hockey players in the hall of fame, yes hockey, but no male footballers, what's going on ???
|
Re: Rules???
If they are famous and from Accy then they should be in the hall of fame.
No matter who they are. |
Re: Rules???
I have to say that I had people asking me about Mike Duxbury here in Brisbane Australia when he first joined Man United. There is a very patriotic element still out here on the other side of the world and I don't think you can get any more International than that. My family and lots of our English friends were thrilled to see a hometown mate do well. He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
|
Re: Rules???
Do you need anymore proof Atarah and Tealeaf that Mike Duxbury maybe is famous enough to be included in the Accy Web "Hall of Fame", thanks Gerry for your support on this topic.
|
Re: Rules???
Bagpuss, this is nonsense. Gerry says someone is famous in Australia because she went to school with him....I'm sorry, I don't see the logic of this argument. These guys are famous on your criteria on the basis that a) they play(ed) football and b) they're from Accy, so they're invariably known by someone.
If you want to stick footy players in here, then surely the basis should be either a) they've been capped for England or b) they have some unique contribution to the game...while no doubt Brett Ormerod is a good premiership player, dos he have an England cap? No.......I vaguely recall that Mike Duxbury picked up a few....but I can't be certain, you see, because he was'nt reallly...famous! |
Re: Rules???
Do you object to cricketers from Accrington who played for England featuring in the "Hall of Fame" or is it just football you have a problem with?
|
Re: Rules???
Problems? What problems?
|
Re: Rules???
No problem....have they played for England? I can think of a few and quite a few more who played for Lancashire. Surely the criteria for any sportsman/woman should be "have they been capped for their country.?"
I seem to recall that about 30 years ago the womens world archery champion also came from Accy or hereabouts......Anyone else old enough to remember, or is this a figment of my imagination? |
Re: Rules???
Her name was Fielding I went to school with her sister Kathleen but I cant remember her 1st name
|
Re: Rules???
Barbara...thats what her 1st name is...my senile owd mind has just remembered LOL
|
Re: Rules???
eee yea i remember her, oo blast from the past, not that i was interested in archery//
|
Re: Rules???
Hi, I am led to believe she was from Clayton and in 1972 retained her title of Ladies Champion at the European Field Archery Championships. Wonder where she is now and if she still plays?
|
Re: Rules???
Sherwood Forrest?
|
Re: Rules???
Did she teach at Accrington and Rossendale College?
|
Re: Rules???
She got the Silver medal in the '76 world championship games and still lives in Clayton and gives Archery lessons.

Re: Rules???
Okay, late entry again - but I agree with Tealeaf. There are many people, well-known in some fields, who came from Accrington. There's Tealeaf and me, for a start!
I do think, however, that it should be restricted to people who are WELL-known - at least well enough known to come up in a general knowledge question. Some cricketers will qualify, not many footballers (and my grandfather was associated with Accy Stanley from its inception, so no prejudice there), but we have enough Accrington alumni who are illustrious (that's me eddication showing through) not to have to fall back on people who are just known locally. Accrington can be proud of its record in producing people who have become known all over the world - Accrington has the best collection of Tiffany outside the US, and probably the second best in the world. The name of the Accrington Pals will never die, although thousands of them did, for almost nothing. John Tomlinson, Harry Birtwistle - names known and revered all over the world. Robert Peel - came from Oswaldtwistle, and Peel Hall is still there - we wouldn't have our police force without him (whatever we say about it). Robert Arkwright - We have a heritage to be proud of. |
Re: Rules???
Tiffany glass and Accrington Stanley are the only ones that have been mentioned to me abroad. When i mentioned the Spinning Jenny most people are amazed and do nt believe it
|
Re: Rules???
What don't they believe about it?
