Fantastic short clip of the film, Helen of Four Gates,...even if they moved the location from Lancashire to Yorkshire!

I haven't seen a banana for going on eleven years. Not wishing to take this woman away from Great Harwood's collective bosom, most evidence does suggest she was born in Oswaldtwistle, and her Wikipedia entry is incorrect. There was an article in the Lancashire Telegraph about 'Red' Ethel. ‘Red’ Ethel had a way with words |
Re: Ethel Carnie Holdsworth, radical & writer
Ossy .... Arrod ....its all Hyndburn, at least she's an 'Accrington and District' Lass or is she from 'Greater Accrington'
Maybe Greg Pope should decide ......he's an Arrod lad :D |

Tha waren't many local radical feminist authors in the early last century so I suppose we 'Arroders won't mind if other communities try to associate themselves with Ethel (in a small and respectful way). Though of course her formative years were spent in the mills of Great Harwood.;) |

Born, bred, and raised in Oswaldtwistle. She moved with her family to Great Harwood aged six. In accordance with the Jesuit saying, about 'Give me the child until seven, and I'll give you the man', that makes her already 86% fully formed as a person, when she had the misfortune to relocate. ;) |

You are all welcome to visit for the lecture - easy access via the Hyndburn Circular bus (or whatever its called now). Drops off outside the library. |
