Professor Dr. William Lever 1943 to 2016

Bill was Professor of Economic Geography at Glasgow University until his recent retirement. He was one of the class of 54 at Accrington GS which produced 5 professors, and other notable academics. It was said to be the best year academically that AGS ever produced. After AGS, he studied at St Peter's College,Oxford, where he gained his D Phil with a study of the Lancashire Cotton Industry.

The Grammar School was made subject of an article in Lancashire Life in the 1980s and the writer concentrated on the achievements of the 1954 intake. Thanks for posting this, Balbus - I have messaged you

"Lancashire Life" also did an article in the later fifties .. '58 or '59 maybe ... titled "The School that Produces Professors" or summat like that. There was a photo of a bunch of lads in the physics lab with Jackie Foulds. I'm in the photo somewhere.:alright: If memory serves me right, Wallwork, Virtue, and Tomlinson were also in that year ... not a bad bunch. The '57 intake probably has more degrees than a cartload of thermometers.;) Ben told me I wasn't university material; so, I bought my degrees through an ad in one of the supermarket tabloids.;)
