Spyware Doctor - don't bother!

I've had many problems over the last week with various random users saying they cannot view some of my websites. Finally today I've figured out that the cause of the problem is a program called Spyware Doctor. It takes regular javascript code and totally ****s it up and causes pages to not display at all.

So, a warning to everyone here, do not bother with Spyware Doctor and be careful of the security programs you do install as they are starting to do more harm than good.

Note to Norton Internet Security users - this is almost as bad and also causes more harm than good to the average internet user, stay away from this as well.

To be honest with you I am really getting on a downer about the lot of them... I bought zonealarm security suite pro because I have never had a problem with the free version and since then I have regretted it - the pro version seems to just do things itself and regularly locks me out of things just for a laugh.
I've tried a couple of others and they have all disappointed. Even kaspersky which I used to love fails on my laptop so I can't use that.

At least zonealarm doesn't mess with internet explorer or firefox like Norton does... Or at least it hasn't messed with them on my computer yet...

do you not think that they are all getting greedy now, they can send whatever they want and mugs will pay to get shut?

Well I use Norton but recently have noticed that sometimes my laptop goes really slow and I have to restart. I wonder if it has anything to you with what you were saying Roy

When I ran Windows(a long long time ago!) Norton was reknown for being resource hungry. I believe it still is.

I also didn't like teh way it 'invades' your PC. Nope, Not for me (if I was still a Windows user, which I'm not or ever likely to be)

I have Trend PC-Cillin, which seems to be fine.

I just turn it off when I am playing games - do you know how annoying it is when you are in the middle of a gunfight and suddenly the AV steps in and does a system scan!

I turn it back on before I plug the modem back in though!

So what about online gaming?

Not good really. I would suggest not using scheduled scans and just make sure you do one once a week or so. That way you decide when they are to be done.

I've always used Zone Alarm and AVG of friends PCs and up to now have had no problems with any of them.

I don't do online gaming - I'd rather play GTA or whatever offline. More control that way.

The only things I have done online are things like the arcade on here, yahoo pool and a couple of other 'arcadey' type games.

I guess that there are more advanced games out there, but I wouldn't know where to start looking for that kind of stuff.

I only turn off the AV if I am not connected - it would be suicide otherwise
