Newsgroups

I was wondering if anybody could tell me a good ISP for newsgroups. Since Wanadoo stopped doing newsgroups (without telling anybody!) I have been kinda lost. I know Orange have taken them over so I can't see THEM doing anything about it.

Re: Newsgroups

I guess it depends on whether you want text only or binaries.

news.individual.net is excellent for text only(10€ a month). I'm sure that some of our avid downloaders will be on shortly regarding binary servers.

Pipex do both but limit you to IIRC 4 gig a month

Forgot to mention, if you can put put up with the interface, groups.google.com works as well

I know google did usenet for a while.. but is groups google actually usenet or there own news system.. i got the feeling it was the latter

I gave up on usenet about 10 yrs ago.. regular use that is. never used binaries.. used it as a messageboard in atari newsgroups.. now limited to the odd visit for a programming answer if all else fails maybe... but there few and far between now.

If people think this messaboard can get a bit argumentative at times... usenet would kill them :) :)

Re: Newsgroups

Usenet was 'taken over' by Google from Deja a good few years ago. It is sort of teh major archive whilst there are hundreds of servers around the world they are all meant to sync with each other this can be sporadic.

groups.google is their interface into their system so I guess its both usenet and their their own news system.

I personally like usenet, I've been on there for over 10 years now and would miss my daily dose of ukrm, linux groups and others. Its also a good repoository for dumping gotchas, useful hints and solutions to obscure problems.

I agree about what some accyweb users would think if they got into usenet!

I went through usenet wars and real group attacks.. they still have there use now and then but I managed to kick the habit...not everyone can :)

IRC ... now thats a habit to be kicked :)

Re: Newsgroups

i get all my "stuff" from astraweb

top notch - never goes down - now u can find what u want from nzb searches and download a simple file from the net to dl the whole thing rather than search for it

plus wiht par2 additions as most binaries have ur almost guaranteed a copy that works

astraweb i think at the mo is the cheapest somethign like $10 a month or sommet

Hello if you're after Binary Newsgroups (ie files) then http://giganews.com is the one I use. I get around 1.5Mb/s with my connection from there. (17'ish MB)
