Newspaper seller bottom of St James Street
 

Someone was telling me about a newspaper seller in past times who stood at the bottom of St James Street. Apparetly he was quite a character and sold the Evening Telegraph and the Last Pink. Does anyone know about the man and what was the last pink?

The last pink was an extra paper that was rushed out on Saturday teatime with all the football scores and reports. Or at least thats my memory of it. And it literally was pink

The Guy you mentioned in your post Dundry was called Sidney Barrow "Sid",as he was known locally he was always able to give racing tips, (I don't think any of them won) even if you didn't bet on the horses Sid would always assume that everyone was interested in horse racing, my Father used to like a flutter on the "gee gees" and I remember He and Sid used to sit and talk for hours outside of Redmans at the bottom of St James Street at the junction with Blackbirn Road. That was in the late 60s/early 70s. As Dave said the pink was the last issue on Saturday of the Lancashire Evening Telegsaph which carried all the sports results, later known as the Sporting Pink and yes it was pink in colour. Wherever Sid was there was also a smell of menthol snuff as he used to snort loads of the stuff.

last sport... which it was for many years
he either stood at the bottom of st james st or
at the bottom of dutton st near the

had a discussion about sid, long ago on a thread i cant remember,as well as selling papers, he was a bit of a bookies runner, and one day He Ran.:rolleyes::D

Pretty sure it,s the same person who used to walk up Royds St on Saturday around 5:30 shouting last sports, I lived on Nelson St. in the early 50s.

I remember Sid coming in the Castle in Whalley Road with two black eyes. he said the wind had got in his paper bag and blown him over. He must have only weighed six stones wringing wet. Too many 'unique individuals' have now gone.

I think he "PINK" was stopped around 1972 certainy wasn't much after
