Pubs that are no more

Reading this Heritage nd History Section has started me thinking, how many old pubs can you think of In Hyndburn that are no longer in use, either changed use or knocked down altogether.
I'll start of with one that closed when I was about seven
The Falcon Mill Hill Ossy

There was also the Palentine in Ossy. I think that was it's name.

I can't remember it ever being open, but I do remember the windows, which had the name acid etched on to them. It's now part of Franco's.

There once was a time when ONLY PUBS could sell alcohol.
I recall passing the door of The Heys Inn in my childhood and a 'selling out' hatch was visible in the vestibule entrance.
The demise of public houses began when supermarkets started selling it, and the smoking ban was the last straw.

Not that I've heard. It must be over twelve months that it has been closed. I bet if someone buys it they'll try and turn it into a residential property, rather than keep it as a pub.

Heard a rumour, unconfirmed, and you know what Ossy's like for gossip, that the Rose and Crown is to close as well.

Maybe you're right, it is a big house. I'll ask my mum.

Before my grandad bought our shop in 1946, it was owned by a baker called Sam Boots, who my grandad worked for, and before the First World War it was a chip shop, so maybe the pub would have been there then.

I found this, on the 1871 census.

329 Union Rd., Oswaldtwistle

George RILEY/head/m/38/stone mason & beer seller/Oswaldtwistle
Sophia RILEY/wife/m/40/Housework/Oswaldtwistle
Mary E RILEY/daur/9/Scholar/Oswaldtwistle
Ann RILEY/daur/6/Scholar/Oswaldtwistle
John RILEY/son/4/Scholar/Oswaldtwistle

Oswaldtwistle 1871 Census Data

Which shows you could get a pint there, but sadly doesn't have what it was called.

I hope so too, there's been enough that've closed.

I really don't think the smoking ban has helped. That was the reason why the landlord of the White Bull in New Lane, gave for getting out.

That was a trick question Cashy....A distant relative of mine through marriage was the landlord......Alan Dewhurst.......He left there to take over the Boot at Burnley and then to the Hare and Hounds at Clayton where he spent many years and finally retired from there......If your still out there Alan.....make yourself known.
We both went to his brother Jacks wedding in Hoddlesden to my cousin...now sadly no longer with us....me at fourteen...Alan at sixteen really got to know the strength of real ale....we were both legless.

think that was the second pub on the right hand side of Whalley Rd. after coming up the brew/hill to to the canal think the first was the Albion , then the Commercial (another Lion pub) , on the opposite side to Clayton Con club , maybe opposite or a bit higher up than the mortuary ( floaters from the canal) where the bus stop is/used to be .

Re. the Hygiene ......for some reason an old bleach/soap factory is lurking in the back of my brain . I'm thinking Accy-web member Mez may know , and if she doesn't she knows who to ask ;) ;)

Well thanks folks, The Comercial, my brother said is an Indian restaurant now, He said he had his first legal pint in there, it was oppisite the old Empress Cinema, that might be a printers now, and steeljack, the chemical works your thinking of, was the old Dr Lovelace soap works, the Vic Club was across the cut oppisite. Is the mortuary & council yards still there, I remember the stone bus shelter.

About 4 doos higher up than Gayle:D Its still there only its a private house, a mate of mine owns it, its just further down than the Nash Club, you could get to it vie the Straits, turn right at the bottom, or off by where the old fire station was. the locals used to go in through the back door at the botom of Milton Street.

Dont think anybodys mentioned the one that used to be on the bus station on Peel St next to where the newsagents is today. You had to go up a flight of stairs to get to it, a very small bar in the early 90's? Cant remember its name though.

I use to go there too, it was the only pub still open after 11 on a sun night but unfortunately forgot the name myself

When the 'Dancing round handbags' got hold of this, I was Dooooomed. :p
