Old Mill Doorway.
2 Attachment(s)
Hi, have you ever noticed a blocked up doorway in what just appears to be a stone wall, on the bottom block of Water Street.
At the bottom of Water Street there used to be a weaving shed known as Melbourne Mill. At one time 600 people worked there! Most of building was demolished after World War II - what was left was used by B.E.L. Fitments. (Think maybe Karrimor had some connection as well afterwards). I am also posting an old photograph showing workers coming out of a mill. I am sure its the same doorway. Any suggestiONS Atarah |

The woman in the shawl on the left is my aunt Maud, she worked there. It has been Walmleys Leather Works, B.E.L. Fitments and Karrimoor. Retlaw. |

Re: Old Mill Doorway.
Hi, Mastabar Belt Fasteners, as far as I knew, were on the opposite side to where this doorway photo is taken. Mastabar was the lovely red brick building which was on Water Street/Melbourne St/Avenue Parade. (Later became Karrimor). I know cos I used to go up onto the top floor each day for dinner. I worked at Mastabar at Church. They had no canteen facilities, so they used to provide a bus to get people into Accrington. You could either do your "own thing" or go to the works canteen. I remember it being good food at reasonable prices.
